Title: Bear Scouting
Post by: Wea300mag on July 10, 2011, 07:47:05 PM
How's everyone's scouting going? I went on a mega hike Saturday and found where the bears are living right now, hopefully they will be there in 3 weeks. I put out a trail camera and plan to check it a couple days before the opener. Unfortunately it takes 2-1/2 hours of mostly uphill hiking to get to it. :(

Been seeing quite a bit of bears lately. I too hope they will be around in 3 weeks. I have spotted 6 this year so far.

Went yesterday and seen one bear way off in a clearcut I usually don't hunt. The area I hunt finally had a fresh pile of poop on the road so I'm hoping that means they are starting to show up. Salmon berries and strawberry's were ripe but mountain blackberries and huckleberries were still green.

I was hoping those mountain blackberries would take a few more weeks before they are ripe

Don't worry D-Rock, I've got some real pretty smelling blackbeary aftershave, that'll bring 'em in just fine. If not, at least I'll smell nice for when we head out.

I'll be heading out in the evenings to some spots locally. I haven't been able to do alot of scouting this year but have seen decent sign. I may hike in to a spot and stay overnight to avoid hiking in 2 days in a row. Now I have to test some handoads. Going to try out some Barnes 168 gr. ttsx for my 300 WSM.

Dont think I will scout until I can carry a gun with legal tag in hand....thought about doing some this weekend, but the sun and lake got the better of me. Trying to decide where to head during opening.

That looks like a pretty nice bear. I haven't been out scouting yet either. Same as stated above, the sun and fishing have been occupying my time. I'll probably start scouting on Aug 1 when I can carry a gun with me. I wish you all success this year.

You can carry a gun with you now, even a rifle if you would like...nothing in the laws stating you can't...just not legal to hunt yet so if a warden came along you may get some grief.....I would just carry a sidearm, that way you can feel safe, without looking like a poacher....

Hoping to get out tomorrow. We'll see. A few spots I usually hunt are still buried under snow. Gonna look at a couple other areas I know to of to see if there is any activity.
