Title: lewis river scouting a bust
Post by: elkontherun on July 10, 2011, 10:17:35 PM
I drew the lewis river sept bull with a rifle so my cousin and I headed up high to look aroun and much to our suprise we couldn't get up past about 4000 ft with the horses! We were able to glass sa small group of elk from a couple miles away. I just can't belive how deep the snow drifts are for this late in the year. Hope it melts soon so I can get up high. Can't wait till sept!

Shouldnt take long to fill that tag. Your probably another two-three weeks away from being able to get up high.

We were up there this weekend around horseshoe lake. The roads were clear to the lake but there was alot of snow back in the wooded areas and on the hikeing trails. Keenas horse camp was clear and accesable. We were able to drive to the Yakima res boundry on the 5603 road. We spotted a small group of cows and calfs and a small bull and a brute at a lower elevation.

not surprising for the long wet winter we had, so my guees we will have a very long summer and come huntn season the woods are gonna be dryer than a popcorn fart

The woods better not be that dry.  I tried getting to the Lewis River by taking the 25rd and it was closed 2 weeks ago.  Is it open now or did you go a different way?

My goal is a 300 inch bull what do you think? Am I dreaming or do you think that is a realistic goal?

Lewis River is a huge unit, lots of good hunting. dont be discouraged there are some Dandy Bulls in the area. they will show up when the Rut comes into full swing. Be patient

You should be able to tag a bull over 300" as long as you put in some effort and can hold out.  I've seen some big bulls in that unit.  Almost put an arrow through a 320ish bull 4 years ago. Darn wind:)
