Greetings fellow Hunters! I just received my master hunter certification this year. I am an archer and discovered that the 6064 Quinault valley elk area is open for master hunters only. I am new to hunting the peninsula and thought that because it assigns me a specific area and may be low pressure it would be a good idea. Does anyone know any specific information about the 6064 elk area? would a guy find alot of elk there for early archery? Bulls? Anything would be helpfull. I do plan on scouting it but I work offshore and the season is right around the corner. Good hunting to all!

Lots of private land and border the national park in areas. So scouting and knocking on doors is a must. Good elk numbers if they are in an area you can hunt.

Hey Thanks alot ! I just jioned this Forum and i am glad I did, Good hunting. I know that as a master hunter repairing the land owner hunter relationship is important.Maybe I can do a little good when im there and hopefully kill a nice bull.

If you are in the are check out the Matheny, Clearwater, and the other areas of Quinault GMU. Make sure you have a good map as these areas border park and tribal lands. Good plan "B" if you are not have success in the M.H. area.

I was thinking the same thing. Thanks alot

Is there anybody else out there with some info or experience hunting the quinault elk area 6064?

Your best bet right now is to search old posts ( there are older posts on refering to Quinalt) and share some info on other subjects - not too many are going to cough up info for some one that has just joined ( only 4 posts so far) - get some time under your belt and the community will be very supportive. Again - there is a lot off info on here already, but you will have to dig.
PS - there is an itroduction thread in the general section.
Welcome aboard :hello:

Hey thanks for the tip! Ya I understand that folks wont give up the good stuff at first. I live in anacortes and hunt the san Juan islands regularly, dispite popular beliefs there are some monster blacktail there and I have alot of property access. The deer numbers are good and its pretty easy to get a second tag. I was drawn for guemes island this year. If anyone has some questions or is having trouble getting access on private land dont be afraid to holler!

Definitely spend some time there and get a glimpse of the "valley" because it's a pretty small area if you are strictly talking about the lowlands. If you are hitting the ridges and canyons then you'll be fine. As you enter the South Shore Road of Lake Quinault it is all National Forest past the Lake Quinault Lodge until you reach the Rain Forest Resort Village. There was a huge wind storm three or four years ago that decimated a couple hillsides so make sure you scout it out or you'll be in areas you can't walk through.
As someone mentioned, the "valley" itself is mostly private land and the people don't own large parcels so the elk will be in a field and walk a couple hundred yards and be on someone else's property. A lot of the locals hunt the "valley" and have permission so it will be difficult to see the elk on someone's property, go knock on a door and expect the elk to be there if you do get permission.
If you continue up the valley into Jefferson County (where the pavement ends) then you'll get to some more hunting areas on the South side of the road. This is where a majority of hunters will set up camps along the road who are not from the area. Don't assume there won't be much pressur. However, you'll see some amazing country.
Beware of shining your lights on the elk in the evening when you drive through because they'll be right beside the road and tame as cattle. But, if they take off and knock a fence down you may be digging fence posts rather than hunting the next day. It gets out of control the night before the opener

Thanks!

Both Grays harbor and Jefferson county has interactive mapping that shows land ownership and aerial photos. Good way to do a little on line scouting. Just Google the county name, state, and GIS or mapping.

Ok cool I will try that thanks alot.

In reality there is no Hunting in the Valley along the southshore road or river anymore. All of the land owners sold out to some group that is contolling everything now. I don't have all the details right now but it is not a good thing. Not even the landowners can hunt on their own property.

Wow thats really interesting. Especially since if it is within the 6064 elk area wich is basically the heart of the quinault valley its master hunter only. Thats what I read in the regs.So is the group who bought everyone out master hunters or what? I guess the whole thing confuses me. But thats too bad

I will make some calls. I am thinking this is rumor mill. I would have heard it from other local sources.
