Title: quality duck call question
Post by: vandeman17 on July 12, 2011, 07:53:24 PM
I am wondering your opinions/feelings on different priced ducks calls. I consider myself a decent caller and can work birds pretty well. Right now my main call is the Primos wench and a Primos whistle. Do you think it would increase our overall success and my chances of calling in a few more birds if I upgraded to one of the nicer calls? It seems to me that it is more about the caller and his ability but then again, almost all of the good callers have the nice calls so there must be something more to it...

you have to find what fits ya. i run strictly foiles migrators all seaon all acrylic. they fit me. the boy runs zinks. they fit him. if you go to cabelas they usually let you test them. heck of alot cheaper than buying something that difficult for you to drive. just my opinion.

That is a good point. If I do test some out, I would like somebody else to be there with me because it is hard to tell how they sound by myself. I like to listen to myself on video to see how my cadence sounds and overall presentation.

Check out Echo calls. Single reed has more range/steeper learning curve. Double reed is more forgiving..
Poly acrylic is a step-up. $35 range.

Guy i hunt with also uses a RNT short barrel. raspy call i like the way it sounds a lot and its doesnt even break 100, again its a slightly different sounding call in my opinion, cause its pretty quiet and raspy but i really like it.

It really depends on how you blow. Guys use acrylics cause the are a little louder and last longer. Before I switched to Rnt Daisy cutter I would go through calls once a season but have gotten five outta my Daisy cutter. Worth it in the long run to spend the money if you use it often

I upgraded to a quality acrylic call (RNT) last season and was pleasantly surprised at the difference it made. The call itself is more crisp and clear, in my opinion...

That being said, waterfowlers have been slaying ducks with the $20 Haydel Dr-85 for years and years. I think its all about what call fits your style best and whether or not you want to invest the money in a higher quality call

I would go and test a few and see which one picks you.  Some use more air, some use less.  Find one that blows easy and you can make sound good.  I have a few RNT's but I don't use them.  I have over a 150 in my collection.

I use a QUACKHEAD,

But maybe there is a reason the guys across the way use to tell me to SHUT THE f*** UP ALL THE TIME.... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

learning to blow a duck call took me quite some time....
