Has anyone in hear hunted the stampede unit in the past? Ive always have seen in elk in there but have not ever hunted it real hard. Any suggestions input?

I scouted it a little saw some elk, but man was it thick cover except the clear cuts.

bow hunted it the past couple of years. Saw one legal bull last year and a handful the year before. There are plenty of elk in there but its steep and thick, so they are tough to find and get to. Im planning on hitting it again this year durring rifle season if it doesnt get hit with a good snow before the season opens. I hunted the 410 side, so I cant say much about the I-90 side.

i have always wanted to hunt it. i have been in there a few times and seen some animals.
i might try it from the i90 side this year for elk.

I would not hunt that unit during rifle season. Just tooooooo many people. Although if'n you do some hiking, you can get away from most of the dummies.

I have archery hunted it since white river changed to permit only and have seen some decent bulls. However, the elk seem few and far between and are very well educated. Last year there was a guy I ran into that came into my bugles and had a damn camera crew with him. Some organization filming a hunt up there....seemed a little ridicoulus to me but some people just have high hopes. The terrain is steep and there are a lot of cover for the elk. Fun hunt and there are some pigs up there. I shot a nice 6x6 archery a few years ago and my dad missed a nice one right on the road :bash: But the last couple years seemed to have slowed down in regards to the rut activity and elk sightings. A lot of bear up there also. Its a fun hunt though and if you can locate the elk and pin-point their feeding and bedding area you can get into them every day. Or you can sometime find them walking the road towards your truck while your contemplating where to make your move and then shoot right over his back as he gives you a " :yike: " look and runs for 2 miles.

This topic seems to come up a time or 3 every year. It seems what elk are there are difficult to find/kill and the indians do a number on them. If you do a search on here you'll find lots of info I bet but it all seems to say the same thing.

Yeah, bowpredator and I spent a few days last Sept, there. We did something like three weekends of scouting in August. We had mixed feelings based on what we saw during the scouts. As bowpredator mentioned, they were not talking when early archery came around and it's thick, steep country where they hide. Other hunters were sharing the same frustration (i.e. no talking). During the hunt I spoke with a logger. He said he saw a nice 5x the week before, but noted that the bull seem unusually spooked.
I would consider hunting it again with a lot more scouting and the commitment (aka fitness) to work the deep, dark holes.

That wouldn't be the Stampede unit.
