Title: Monte Cristo
Post by: timberghost72 on July 14, 2011, 08:55:24 PM
I decided to hike up alone (wife didn't want to go) to the old mining town of Monte Cristo up off the MLH. I have been wanting to go there for years. Its an 8 mile round trip to the town site and the bridges are washed out. Its mostly a old road walk except for the short trail and log crossing the river because of the bridge wash out. It is awesome up there. I spent an hour and a half exploring around before I had to head back and I didn't see everything. Next time I go up I'm going to backpack it and spend some time looking for the mines and the rest of the town. I recomend if you can go up there to do it. Here are just a few pics.  That turn table for the train still turns.

This is up off of the Mountain Loop Hwy at Barlow Pass. It is about 30 miles from Granite Falls

Here is a link to some good info and old pictures. http://www.mcpa.us/ (http://www.mcpa.us/)  The town once held 2000 residents way up there and supported hotels, garages, and a newspaper. All in the late 1800's to early 1900's. I love this old stuff more and more.

Just so you know most years there is someone that stays up there in the summer to keep the riff raff out of the mines and from getting hurt on private property.

Yeah there are some forest service cabins up there along the way and other private propery. Those who have property have a key to the gate and can drive back (only 1 mile though since the bridge washed out in 2006. I think thats when it washed out.)

Well, that's good news!!!  :IBCOOL:

I had given up after seeing the sign just outside of town and then I saw an article in the paper that said it was shut down indefinitely.

Might have to venture up there this weekend...
