Title: Wyoming speed goats!!
Post by: xxlx7 on July 20, 2011, 12:09:11 PM
Just paid for my tags for speed goats!!! I can't wait. Should be a good trip, gonna try to get one with my smoke pole, as well as whatever rifle I buy in the next couple weeks. So for the important question, I want to buy an all around rifle. One I can take up to Alaska next year and take a moose and carabou with, plus the deer, bear, and other random things I get to shoot in our wonderful expensave state that makes you go broke... Thinkin like a 7mm rem mag or something but not sure.

I will be taking my 30.06 to wyoming this year.  I think it would do all you are asking.

If you are wanting a gun to hunt big critters with as well. I would go at least 30-06 and lean more towards the mags like the 300wm.

300 WSM or 270 WSM would be good all around choices if you're looking for a new gun.  A 30-06 will do fine.  You just have to crawl a bit closer.  If you just want a dedicated speed goat gun get a 257 Weatherby.

Just bought all my Wyoming tags too.  I'm taking my .308.  I can hit consistantly out to some good ranges with it.  I also have a .270 WSM which is a flat shooter.

I have taken 3 Alaskan moose with my 30-06.  all one shot kills.  Pleanty of gun for everything Alaska has except the Big
coastal brown bears.  Ammo is cheep too so you can shoot more.

300WSM IMO. Great gun, plenty of pow for the big boys. You can shoot 150 gr bullets on the smaller animals, ie. goats. Flat shooting. I just got one and LOVE it. Got about 200 rounds through it so far in the past 4 months, all handloads, so still cheap shooting. Using it in September for my Moose Trip.  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

I am leaning towards the 300, any good recommendations? I am not a rifle guy, I have smoke poles and shotguns, and a couple fun guns, but no hunting rifles. Anyone buy tags for unit 22??? That's where we will be hunting

I have the same gun and killed a couple deer and elk with that same load, one deer at a touch over 400.  I switched to the Winchester Supremes with the 200gr Accubond and that just tipled my love for that gun.  Killed 2 Moose with it and 1 elk with that load.  Mine has the VXIII in 3.5x10, with B&C reticle, this would do a guy just fine as an all around gun and would work well if you ever get a chance at the big brownies as well.

Antelope are hard to hit, easy to kill if you do.  They're smaller than deer and a lot smaller than elk.  Top to bottom is around 14".  You want an accurate, flat shooting rifle.  You don't need much power to kill one.  Hitting an antelope at 400 yards is about like hitting an elk at 600.

My Father, Brother and I went in 2007. Had a great time! something wierd happened though! My father hit one with a remington 700 30-06, at like 80 yards and dropped it, by the way dad had not shot this rifle in mmmm.... 20 years? Firtst animal I have seen him tag in almost as many years anyway when we skinned it the bullet went between two ribs through the heart between two more ribs and never exited the off side??? It was a 150gr federal premium which I have had alot of luck with.  I hit one at 150 yards with my 7mm 139 gr hornady and no problem. Brother hit one at like 50 yards same 7mm and no problem.  Not very big animals but couldn't figure out why the 06 didn't exit?

I second the .257 Weatherby.
Wow, I though my 7mag was a shooter until I picked this thing up .
I will be in WY near Douglas for antelope and mulies come mid Oct.
