I see 560 Lewis River produces quite a few 5 and 6 point+ bulls during the rifle hunt. Would the East side of the unit or the Mt. Adams side, be the better area to scout for big bulls? I appreciate all advice, specific areas and tips. Thanks, CC.

The areas just south of Mt Adams are well known for the berry fields. Lots of Bears in this unit. Just look for areas with huckleberries and little road intrusion (roads usually mean berry pickers in September and October) There are tons of roads in this unit and the key to finding deer is to get on a 5-10 year old clearcut, get out of the truck, and hunt the fringes. The amount of logging occurring on the Gifford Pinchot has been slowing down over the years and is allowing for prime deer habitat to become more grown over and less browse is available. But, still the amount of land and access in this unit should provide anyone wanting to get out and hike, quite a bit of opportunity to find deer.
A hunter could find some good success in the early season around areas like French Butte an Badger Peak. Early season North Facing slopes should hold deer and elk. South slopes (where the ripe berries are) should hold your bears.
The areas around the the south side of the Monument hold early season elk and deer populations. Perfect for bowhunters.

Ha, Ha! Do any of you regulars know which areas in 560 produces the larger bulls? There are nearly 3000 rifle hunters in 560, so it's not like a big secret? If this Forum makes fun at the new guys expense, I guess I'll look elsewhere. CC.

Hey Cabo, I think what they are all gettin at is you gotta be crazy if you think they are gonna send you to their honey holes! I hunt it but drew Quality this year so won't be there. Great area and your just gonna have to get out and put some miles on your boots.

Think about your post cabo. You are asking advise on the internet from strangers, strangers who gave countless hours learning areas, learning from mistakes, and putting out their blood sweat and tears to obtain knowledge. The fact that there will be 3000 rifle hunters makes knowledge values go up greatly. If you know a specific area that holds bulls much less older age class bulls you best keep it a secret. There are a lot of good guys and gals on here with a TON of knowledge, some of which they will share.
I have gained acess by trying to give more than I ask for (some times it works sometimes not). That might just mean driving on a scouting trip and buying dinner, sometimes it encompasses much more. I think often times I try to pay it forward just in case I need info even general info.. :twocents: :twocents:

Yep! Far away from the half hearted and road hunters.

Dead wrong. Many here, especially me, welcome new members.but that's for those who show up with stuff to share: stories, pictures, etc. Not asking for stuff out the gate.
Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Trust me, you don't want to hunt the 560 and there are no elk anywhere near it. I'm glad I can be of help!

Well said Beancounter.
I have been hunting that unit for over 20 years. Took me about 5 years to find our honeyhole. Let the shoe leather hit the ground and then study a lot of maps. Good luck in your scouting.

Cabo,
I know you are asking for which side but this is a huge unit. I have only hunted over in the old Marble unit where I have seen a few nice 5x5's but never a 6 (archery). These bulls you are talking about can be anywhere in this unit. Larger bulls in this unit are most likely a long way from the roads and the hunters that take them put a lot of work into finding them.
If you are only looking for larger bulls, get out and scout, its the only way to get what you are looking for. No one here is being mean and are more then willing to have discussions when they know who they are talking to ;)....the rest is research!
Good luck

I'm starting to understand the attitude towards newbies coming in on their first post asking for the proverbial "tied up bull". It does take some major cahones to ask where to find a big bull and then act all hurt when people don't give GPS coordinates. Interesting perspective.

Heck, I could have been real nice.. told him to go to the top of snagtooth, then start hunting... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I thought I gave him some good advice... :dunno:
Other than, if you want to shoot a big bull, dont shoot a small one.
:twocents:
The Elk are going to be spread all over unit, not like they all hang around the same cows, and live in the same drainage.....

Lewis river 560 is a big unit, there are good numbers of Elk throughout the whole unit. It will be good in any part of the unit. Pick an area and spend some time there, and if you are much of a hunter you should find Elk.
-
How much money do you have or want to spend? I've been hunting this area for 30 years, could use some cash!! :chuckle:
-
You will find one big bull in the back of my truck around noon on opening day of archery, if that helps any.

Don't overlook the beautifull wilderness areas in 560, they are worth your effort.
