The water was pretty rough around the mouth of the Columbia but the Northriver handled it well.
I made one major mistake though. Please keep in mind that its been 32 years since I've fished the saltwater and I should have known better. I was reminded that its barbless hooks only and apparently has been for about 30 years.
The $75 ticket made it a damn expensive Coho. The Deputy said he had no choice but to cite everyone for this violation. (Im still thinking BS.....he could have told us to just crimp down our barbs)
Remember guys and gals...... Barbless hooks only in the saltwater!

Yeah, he said there was no choice but to cite everyone. I understood I was getting the ticket but then didn't feel it was right that after issuing, he wanted to lecture me as well. Dad told him to STFU. I know a bunch of cops but it seems that many in the Marine Patrol Units think its their job to generate revenue to fund their unit. I don't get it, we complied immediately and were more than cordial until we got our cites and he tried to chew us out as well.
It should have been obvious that we were trying to comply with every rule, we had every piece of safety equipment known to man, and had stickers for inspections by three different agencies now.
Guess I wont venture into Clatsop County to fish for a while. Which is another thing..... how far out do you have to be before your in Federal Waters.... We were like five miles out.

Load of BS, I think you experienced Wa. tabs in OR syndrome... I've never seen one angler in Puget Sound cited for that, only given warning's, unless they were repeat offenders.
I saw a guy get nicked for about 30 barbs once :chuckle: he was using a drop rig with about 10 trebles on it to snag chums at Hoodsport :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: no one cried for him either :)

Once you are out of the boat basin you are in Federal Waters. Internatoinal Waters is 3 miles out (acrossed the bar)

I admitted that I was wrong and will pay my fine. I truly didn't know because like I said, its been more than thirty years since I've been on the ocean. We usually fish the river which allows barbed hooks. Its my bad but it pissed me off when he gave me the cite and then tried to monologue me about it as well.
Either write the ticket or give me the lecture, not both. Then after being a jerk, he parted by saying "Have a nice day" in a sarcastic tone. That just means F-you.
Its entirely up to the Deputies or Officers as to if they will cite or not. If they do not have this discretion, they aren't trusted to make decisions. I think Deputies and Officers should be more geared towards education and compliance rather than revenue. Telling me to crimp the barbs would have accomplished the same goal.
Its not like I was fishing with multiple hooks. I saw the enforcement boat for about half hour before he pulled up along side of us. I had ample opportunity to change the gear or leave, we just didn't know.

Exactly and how many other guys in your vote are left permanently disgruntled over a $75 ticket. Does more harm than good in the long run I would think.
The officer should have been smart enough to figure you weren't intentionally breaking the law.
