So my buddy and i have been hunting in the Winston unit (520) the last couple of years. we have taken a couple of elk out of there but have always packed them out on our backs. ive heard on the sight that guys get vehicle access threw the gates if they have an elk down. i was curious on how to get that access. i love packin animals out but if they are gona make it easy on us we might as well use it :chuckle: any help would be much appreciated

I believe the number is 360-537-8497. It is usually posted on the bright orange signs they have at all the gates.

Last year was drawn for Toutle, linked up with other member of the site, we did all the planning and maade phone calls. They said sure if we get one down call them. He whacked one towards the evening. Got it gutted we walked out called them when we got service and they said they might be able to get someone out by the next afternoon. Plan on packing it out.

Understandable, I wouldn't expect them to send someone that night, nobodies working.

Well I would expect them to send one out in the morning, not maybe the next afternoon, that would of been 24 hours with the elk sitting there. It's all good, we just packed it out. And there is always a guard working 24-7.

Ya I ne maybe part is a little much haha. However it is very generous for them to offer the service at all I must say. Packing out is a good way to go anyhow, I enjoy the workout and its all part of the experience. (that is, unless the animal is 5 miles from camp/roads. :chuckle:

Plan on packing out. But keep the number cuz it may save you. I killed a bull 3 yrs ago up cowweeman got it taken care of and took load 6 miles back to truck. was on the cell with reinforcements, when they showed up ( i wasnt back to the truck yet) They had called the number posted and a gentleman came out and let us in. This was a sunday afternoon. We were allowed to take my pickup in after securing all our bows in another rig. Dunno if this is SOP or not.

Got it on speed dial 1-800-458-0274
Think it says something like if you have an animal down and need access to call that #

Thanks a ton everyone. hopefully i have to use the information this september

I have hunted the Winston for years. If you call the number they give you the combination to the lock on the gate. It changes every 24 hours so you can't use it again. Be prepared to give a description and license plate number of the truck you will be driving in.

I have been let in in coweeman. With description and plate number of rig. There was only one security guy for the entire area and he was just up The road. We got lucky. We had the quartered bull hanging in a shady tree at the 8.5 mile marker from the gate.

1-800-458-0274. You have to know the road you are on and gate to access it. It then depends on whether a security person is in the area. Last year they were not in our area and we packed it out. I would be ready to pack, but it's always worth a shot to make the call.

Like others have been said be ready to pack it out but call and see what the time line is for someone to come let you in. Last year I killed my bull, got him all taken care of and hiked out, called WEYCO . Was lucky they were working lower on the hill and the gate was open, lady on the phone asked if I needed a gate open, told her no and which gate I would be going in. She took my name, vehicle description etc and asked how long it would be. Told her I had it by the road and would only be up there 45 minutes or so. She said go in and call when you come out. Nice and simple. Worked out well for me that day since my buddys weren't with me and I was able to take care of everything by myself with out having to call for help.
