I need to have my youngest use iron sights because he can't get his head close enough to the scope on my scoped rifle. Look at this picture:

I was always taught to aim like the sight on the right of the picture but, it's been forever since I've shot an iron sight gun. Everything I'm finding on the intarwebs is saying use the sight picture on the left. Which is it?

The one on the right and I was taught by the Finest Firearms Instructors in the World! I wish you lived near me I could provide you with my old shooting book from Recruit Training and all the fine info. we received from our Firearms Instructors.
I was fortunate enough to be 1 of 9 in our platoon to earn the Expert Rifle Badge. IMO, I think everybody should learn how to use the iron posts before they move onto a scope.

I'm no sniper or professionally trained marks man but no self respecting country boy could keep a straight face and tell you the one on the left would be the one to use. go right young man

I too say go with the right. I set mine up to impact right on the tip of the sight...such that the the front sight would actually obscure the bottom half of the bullet hole. Occasionally I'll look at one of those instruction manuals you get with the gun, or the papers I got from hunter's ed...and they would have the picture from the left. Always thought it was just for demo, but then again they could be smokin some of that seattle herb.

Depends on the sights. I shot a garand that was set up for balancing the ball, but most will be the one on the right, splitting the ball.
