I went out last night to do some calling. I was set up in the corner of an older clear cut. I had bears grunting all around me for almost 3 hours, they would get close, but they never came into the open. For the last hour I moved my call out toward the center of the clear cut more to try and draw them out.......it didnt work. Does anyone have any tricks or ideas on what to do next time to get them in the open? There were at least 4 different bears that I could hear in different directions.
Still looking for my first bear and feel like I am closer than ever.

:dunno: I am having the same issue.

yeah a big pile of bait topped with a 5 gallon bucket of fry grease :chuckle:, sorry man dont know squat about calling bears, but i do know that bears circle so there might have been lees bear than you think and maybe he is a big smart ole boar, maybe you could use scent but i dont know if that is still considerd baiting. good luck to ya

yeh using sent is considered baiting still, pretty much any attractant is, just keep trying man its just like calling in anything, i have gone coyote hunting and had a dozen coyotes howling around me and never see a one......one will come in or show its self sooner or later

Go in after them. :chuckle: If I was a bear I wouldnt want to go out into the open either.

I had to pick one off last night in the shower. God I hate those creepy little critters.

Funny stuff right there, picked one off in the shower......first time I smiled all morning, thanks.

It is DEFINATELY multiple bears unless they have the ability the teleport. I was hearing the grunting within seconds in completely different areas around the cut. I feel confident that I will get one this year.......just need one to make a mistake and step clear of the brush. I would consider going in after them if I thaught there was even a remote chance of getting close.....there is too much brush/ downed wood to move quietly.
A honey burn would probly work.......IF it were legal. Dumb law if you ask me. Oh well.....
I will be back out there with a partner and my tree stand next chance I get. Maybe with a higher vantage point I might be able to see down into the brush? Its worth a try.

Ooops. Sorry. Read the thread title wrong. That's what I get for posting without reading the entire thread first

Must be the reason for the nice coats this year, shampoo and conditioner !

are you using an electronic caller? cause if you are maybe you could set it up where you were and then sneak into the woods where you think they held up and then set your electronic caller off, maybe they will walk right into you..

Yep. I am using my foxpro. I thaught about doing that but I was by myself. I might try that next time I go out. maybe my partner and I set up at either side of where they hung up? I will be trying everything possible to get a bear this year. This was my second time calling for bears and the second time they have come in but not shown themselves. It is an adrenaline rush knowing they are close and they think there is prey nearby.

thats what i loved about baitn, it was a rush to see how close you could set up to the bait, my closest was 3 ft, and it was a hell of a rush, hell i liked just watchn the bears more than killn one, but i guess we dont have to wirry about getn to do that again, well good luck to ya cant wait to see the pics when you crack him.....

do you think they are waiting to see something(the wounded fawn or cottontail i dont know what your using) until they come out in the open? can you use one of those fake rabbits on a stick that flipps around? :dunno:
-
I had thaught about that but thaught it was too thick for them to see out of the brush they are in. I may not have caught them peeking out or am unable to see a lane that they could see out of. I will have to see if I can build some kind of motion decoy. It will have to be pretty bigor at least tall to get above the brush. Any ideas?

a tall stick with either some feathers or a ratcoon tail, and stick it in the ground and tie a string to it and just give it a yank every now and again, i think you will have alot more fun if you hide inside the tree line and leave your caller out on the cut. just know what the thermals are doing at whatevevr time you are huntn, might make all the differance in the world.. :twocents:
