Title: Shotgun for wife help
Post by: fishunt247 on August 05, 2011, 05:57:45 PM: I'm looking to get a shotgun for my wife. Her grandparents want to give one to her as a gift, so my first thought is a Benelli Montefeltro Youth model which she has shot before and shot well. Does anybody have any experience with either of the following: CZ 720 Semi Auto Youth Reduced Lenght, CZ Redhead Deluxe Youth Reduced Length, Franchi 720 Short Stock, Remington 11-87 Sportsmen Youth Compact, Beretta AL391 Urika Youth???

For now she'll be hunting doves, quail, and pheasants. Possibly turkey in the future. Any advice is appreciated. I shoot a Benelli and always have, so I don't have experience with the other brands. Thanks.

Post by: superdown on August 06, 2011, 06:15:03 PM: I have one of these and my girlfriend who is 4'11" and a 100lbs+/- a little loves to shoot this a Browning bps upland special 20gauge it's very light at 6lbs. 12oz.

Post by: marlin on August 06, 2011, 07:07:53 PM: My girlfriend has a winchester 1300 20ga, like new, pretty wood, 28" barrel and she likes it. very little recoil. I traded a stoeger 2000 piece of crap for it. I shoot a winchester 1200 12ga, the 2 guns are almost identical but I have the hogue overmolded stock and 22" barrel on mine. It doesnt kick like your average 12ga either. The way the action works on the 1200/1300 helps to reduce recoil, the action doesnst stay locked up after the shot, the starts to open upon firing which soaks up recoil pretty good and theyre the fastest pumping shotguns out there. Ive had 870's and mossbergs that couldnt compare.
I havent shot any of the guns you mentioned, but remington 1100 20ga in either premier, sporting, or tournament would be a very nice shotgun. I really want one of those. low recoil and very nice looking.. People look at you funny when you shoot skeet with a pump, even if youre dustin the targets. 1100 20ga will probably be my answer for that.

Post by: addicted on August 06, 2011, 09:05:59 PM: My wife loves shooting the Semiauto Franchi I-12. The gel insert makes recoil really no problem for her. She used it for a lot of skeet shooting then finished the season off with a Seaduck hunt. She shot the first bird of the morning.

I have friends with Remington autoloaders that don't like to eject low base, which is primarily what she will be shooting.

Benelli's don't have a problem with ejecting anything, ever.

I'd like to stick with an autoloader for her, for the recoil factor and for more success on follow up shots (though I learned on a pump like most).

addicted, does the Franchi have any trouble ejecting low base ever, or does it seem to handle most anything?

Post by: boots on August 07, 2011, 04:19:15 PM: In my opinion the Benelli Monte is the cream of the crop out of the shotguns you listed, but the extra quality does come at a price. Depending on the budget of the grandparents I think it would be a fine choice. If cost was an issue you could always go in on it with them for a quality shotgun that will undoubtedly be a great weapon for her for a long time

Not a cheap gun... But thats what I got my wife also. And she loves it. :chuckle:

Benelli's do not fit me at all and have dumped every one that I have owned. I shoot a Beretta 391 and a Winchester SX 2 (made by Browning) in sporting clays; about 300 rounds a month. Both come in youth/women stocks the Silver Micro is as well. :twocents:

franchi is a benelli at heart. So no, it never had any troube ejecting ANYTHING. It's really a nice piece.

They may be shooting Magnum only recievers/barrels. I have a magnum 1100 that is only for 3" shells. To fix it you have to mount a regular 2 3/4" barrel on it, which has an additional gas port.

One of the reasons I selected it is because she shoots left handed and I shoot right handed. The BPS is ambidextrous as it ejects down out of the bottom and the safety is on top. I really love the gun as it is so light weight you can carry it around forever.

Post by: Mr56Jeep on August 08, 2011, 07:14:00 PM: Well, this got me thinking... I just took the Kick-Off unit out of my Xterema. That shortens up the LOP by almost 2". Still not quite as short as her Montefeltro but she had been asking me to do it for her anyway.

Tomorrow we take it to TSC and see how she does with it. :chuckle:
