when im guiding, i most always keep a rifle in the boot off my saddle. its either a carbine m760 270 pump or a m70 30-06 ranger.. both are very short, very light rifles ,, both unscoped.. when we are packing or doing whatever, its nice to have around.

I'll usually have one for my expeditions to unknown lakes, out in the brush...my lady and I do a lot of hiking into "less fished" waters. Ya never know when you'll run across something hungry, or some tweakers...or a grow-op.

Usually, if it involves a backpack, a fishing pole, or a hunting license...and I can legally do so...I will have something with me.

More than often an XD-40, Ruger Security Six in  .357, or also somewhat common is a simple .22.

That being said, I don't concealed carry on a daily basis...I don't see *much* need given the area's I live and frequent. If I ever get something smaller/lighter, I may consider it...but not at this moment.

I always strap on the .44 when looking for sheds in the deer and moose wintering grounds. It's also the wintering grounds for cougars. I've seen quite a few cat tracks in the snow but haven't come face to face with one yet. I haven't had to draw down on anything yet but if nothing else, I just feel better knowing I have it while going thru the real thick stuff. It's kind of hard to outrun a cougar when I have snowshoes on.
