Just wondering if anyone has one of these small, folding stoves that are sterno powered? Usually run $8-12 at most sporting goods stores.
I've seen 'em a few times, and wondering if they're any good for cooking a can of soup, chili, etc...or if they're even worth the hassle. I do a lot of day hikes, and having a decent, warm meal is sometimes nice....but carrying a larger gas stove just isn't worth the hassle on a 6-10hr hike, and sometimes a campfire simply isn't an option.
If anyone has one....
Do you pack it often?
What have you used it for?
Does it put out enough heat to warm up some beans or soup in a reasonable amount of time?
Would you recomment one?

I own this and it is absolutely perfect for what you are describing. It is a little bit more money but well worth it. Also, learn to fashion yourself a little hobo stove, just in case you run out of fuel. The sterno stoves are ok in a pinch, but take some time to heat up.

A little coffee sure helps on a rainy camping weekend.

I used a sterno stove for years. works well for most cooking if you are patient.
Cooking bacon is a evolution in futility. You can do it, you better have a long time to wait.

For me I use my Esbit stove to warm up a cup of water for hot chocolate, tea, or even bullion. Its light weigth and you can get the trioxane fuel tables on ebay or other places.

I also have the Jetboil. I have used it for almost 3 years and I love it. Matter of fact my brother noticed I use mine so much that he bought one. I even use it on day trips when I want a hot meal.

Thanks guys! That's exactly the info I was looking for...
I think I'll pick on of these up tomorrow, if I can find one locally, and give it a shot this weekend.

Esbit for short trips. 12 minute burn time per tablet, will boil enough water for one guy, one meal. Love the esbit. I brew one coffee each hunt day on the trail.....

I use the sterno stove, how ever don't use sterno. I use esbit cubes on a stand to make them the right height or my swiss army alcohol stove. I use this set up for the same reason you mentioned. plus it is easy and I can use the esbit to heat water and the alcohol stove to simmer or fry.
