Post by: PLUVIUSWAPITI on August 12, 2011, 12:54:59 PM
Fish are in the river. Neighbor caught nice 15lb king last night and 30lb king on last Sat morning. He was trolling up river from the Wilson crk boat launch, also saw a few fish rolling in the river last night.

I fished this mornings low tide on hwy 105 and only saw one fish jump. Fished for just an hour and quit. Polarbear only saw one boat behind the house trolling this morning.

I've always wanted to fish the Willapa but ihave yet to do so.  I'm not quite sure where or how.  I suspect that it is slow trolling herring with a dropper wieght like we do up at Cathlamet for springers.   :dunno:

PolarBear, you are right on how to fish the Willapa. Troll slow, I would also put a flasher ahead of your cut plug herring. You can put in at the launch at the South Bend, I believe a $5.00 launch fee. Up higher towards East Raymond you want to use a rudder with a flash-glo, and use the Wilson Crk launch. This also requires Discover pass or WDFW parking pass.

i like a #6 vibrax, makes a little more noise than a flash glo, i think it helps in that muddy water.  i'll be down by wilson creek saturday morning.

bigcountry, sorry I can't help you with the bay report. On Friday morning there was five fish caught below the house, and I was on the Hoh river getting skunked.Saw some fish jumping this evening below the house.

No problem Pluvius...well I'll give ya a report since we fished it.  We got 3 fish on Friday,  really had to work for them though.  Didnt see many caught.  Figured the river should be getting decent here any day.  Beautiful day on the bay.

Lots of boats this morning at the South Bend Boat Launch. Haven't heard much about the bay, I know they are catching fish above the Wilson crk launch last couple of days.

Right now it could;nt be better my buddy hooked 20 and caught 11 yesterday. I called him today and they had a fish on. Like was said herring behind a fish flash seems to be the answer also it;s a 3 fish limit. I hate to go on week-ends but going to go anyway just can;t stand it. An hour before to an hour after high water has been the best lots of fish seen on.

absolutely nothing happened in the bay :fishin:  Only thing we caught was a good buzz.  3 of us fished from daylight to 4 pm and only had 1 strike, nice fish that broke my swivel off near the boat.  So if anyone catches a nice king with a green fish flash trailing behind...let me know :chuckle:  We didnt even see 1 fish caught, heard of a couple but thats it.  Amazing how fishing changes in that bay so quick.

YoterHunter - are we talking about the same Willapa Bay?  :chuckle:  Serious we were out there for 10 hours straight and got 1 strike.  We never saw 1 net fly?  If ya dont mind me asking where abouts were you fishing?  We fished from south bend all the way down to north river.  Using the same gear.

I stopped at the South Bend ramp on Sunday on our way back from Buoy 10 and talked to a guy that fished all the way out to the bay and in the river and hadn't gotten a hit or seen any caught.  :dunno:

We fished the bay yesterday. Launched at South Bend. Fishing the morning low was tough. Tons of stuff in the water, nearly impossible to keep your gear clean. The water was real dirty too. We ventured off out towards Washaway beach. Super clear water and instantly starting hooking up. Unfortunately I get very sea sick easy so I didn't last long out in that water. We moved back into the bay for the high tide change. We were just trolling herring no fish flash. I missed three and my buddy caught a nice 20 lbr. For about two hours we saw people getting fish like crazy. They all had fish flashers which I think made the big difference in our hookups. I felt like crap so I wasn't fishing to seriously. Still fun, but next time I'm going to try some preventatives.

Looked out the this morning at the river, looked like I-5 with all the boats. Don't have much of a report. If we don't get some rain soon we have  bunch of dark fish stacked up in tide water.

Saw a lot of gillnet net boats on the road today so they must have fished last night but not sure how far down river they can fish.

i swung by the wilson creek launch on the way home yesterday afternoon and floated some eggs around.  nothing for me other than a couple little pecker bites, but the boats coming in all seemed to have caught fish.  not too many people fishing the afternoon.

Fished down there 2 days over the weekend between south bend and north river.  We limited 1 day and caught 5 the other.  Definately not red hot bite for us but steady, seemed to be about 1 strike per hour.  We put in some hours to get those fish.  Wish the fishery lasted longer.  Sounds like the nets will be out next Monday.

upriver was deader than dead monday.  only saw 1 fish caught, i had one good bump that didn't stick.  looked like bumper boats up above the launch.

we need rain, a lot of the rollers i saw were turning black :bash:

when i was taking out, a big tree had drifted and gotten stuck across the boat ramp.  i got out just in time, i had to jacknife my trailer and hop my boat over it to get out of there.  with the tide running out i bet a lot of guys got stuck out there in the river.  sometimes it's nice having that gas guzzling jet on my boat :chuckle:

I have been kicking myself in the butt over wether or not to head down there.  I have this coming Friday off and was planning on it but I kinda doubt it now, especially since I have never fished it before.  I need some redemption after getting my butt kicked at Buoy 10 3 weekends in a row.

Fished down there the last weekend of august for 4 days.  The first 2 days sucked fishing in the channel but the last 2 days we killed em out towards washaway.  Sounds like fishing is still good and may be heading down there one day next weekend.
