I was out picking mushrooms today and stumbled across a ghost plant and I am enticed by the alien-like characteristics...

Looks cool. Never seen one before. Were you on the east side or the west?
-
that is a cool looking plant

I saw a couple of the same plant last week on the wet side
-
I saw one also over the weekend, barely on the west side.

Those are called Indian pipe. Kinda an oddball plant in nature because they dont get their nutrients from the sun. They are white cause they lack chlorophyll to absorb sunlight so they actually feed off the roots of trees using fungus. I always seem to find a few of them mushroom picking every year. ALways thought about maybe digging one up and plant it by the spruce tree in my yard. :dunno:

ya west side near fungus spores and what not...but I guess they are used for many remedies and will actually begin to dissolve in your hand if you pick them. I dont think that I would use them for anything however...
