I was looking at picking up one of the Weatherby Mark V in .257 Weatherby mag for deer hunting. I wanted to see if anyone else is currently using one and what their experiences have been?
-
I don't shoot one currently but they will kill deer graveyard dead with high efficiency to extended ranges, great caliber. :twocents:
-
Ask the guy with the name 257 weatherby on here.
-
I had one and loved it. The only reason I got rid of it was the ammo was like $80 a box. If you reload then it's not a big concern. There's a few guys on here running them and they are flat shooting machines and really fast.
-
25-06 on roids. I think it's true value used to be hurt by the bullets available in .257 (mostly designed for 250 Savage and 257 Roberts-type velocities). With the higher quality bullets out, this is becomes a phenomenal deer cartridge.
If you reload, it's a great setup. If not, it'll really hurt your wallet as jackelope noted.

I dumped my wby ultra light for a vanguard as it shoots soo much better. I have taken elk over 400 and deer a bit closer all with 100gr tsx's....they are the hammer of thor. Add a good dose of rl 22 and form from 7mm rem brass for a cheap flat shooter that takes a wildcat to best.
-
.257 Weatherby + proper bullet + proper shot placement = DRT (dead right there).
Next question?
You might want to let the game get out there a bit before taking the shot... :chuckle:

It's a great caliber and perfect for deer. Get a good bullet to run threw it and it will level any deer. I know a few guys that hunt elk with them and they do just fine. I have shot a 25-06 for years off and on and been around more then a few deer killed with them. The 257wby is just faster and flatter.
-
Know a few guys who have been using them and love them. Drop. deer on the spot I bought one this year and its a tack driver. My buddy already dumped a bear with it.
-
25-06 is my favorite caliber, so I'm thinking .257 ought to be about the same.
-
I have one that I bought for wolf hunting in Idaho. My gun guy is a critical mofo. Got it sighted in a 200 yards. He said this gun is the "money ". I bought my ammo from www.grafs.com (http://www.grafs.com) for $75. 2 boxes of Weatheryby 100 grn Hornady SP delivered. It's a tack driver for sure. Mine's the Vanguard from www.lowpriceguns.com (http://www.lowpriceguns.com). Can't beat their prices, cheaper than anyplace I found. I paid $424 for mine plus $9.95 shipping.
-
A .257 WBY MAG in a Mark V is very hard to beat for a "Cadillac" deer gun.

A friend of mine was shooting one 3 weeks ago when we were shooting steel. He pulled that badboy out of the case and, OMG, was that gun beautiful. Beautiful stock, stainless fluted barrel and a brake on 'er. I'd be afraid to scratch it. He shot the 877 steel with it, that's when I decided,I WANT ONE, but got the Vanguard instead.
-
There shouldn't be much difference accuracy or shooting wise unless modifications are made, but it's just the classic appeal that sets the Mark V ahead.

one of my dream rifles would the weatherby mk v ultra light left hand in 257wby mag with a leupold VX-L 6.5-20x56  If i had an extra $3,000 laying around

There's one on gunbroker right now for $1559! Do it.

The "same" plus about 400 ft/second. ;)
The 257 Weatherby is a marvelous cartridge. Sure, ammunition is expensive but how many shots at game animals are you planning to take, anyway? If it costs $4/cartridge and you shoot 20 rounds per year, so what. There are better places to save money than big game ammunition, IMO.

I guess when I have the 300wm and the .280 Rem and the 7 Rem Mag I don't need the .257, especially not with the cost of ammo. With that said, I definitely regret getting rid of it....which seems to be the case with most of the rifles I've gotten rid of. The .257 turned itself into a nice bow setup though, so all for a good cost I guess.
-
All ammo is expensive these days. Excellent cartridge--go for it!
-
I have one and use it for everything from rockchucks to elk. It is awsome!
-
One of my hunting buddies has a mark V in .257wby. I have seen him shoot a few deer and he killed 4 elk that I know of with it. Always worked fine. I liked shooting it too. I want one, I just have not bought one yet.
-
Do yourself a favor and use 7rem brass.....it becomes cheap to shoot. As for the mark v, I hated mine, it was a 1.25 moa gun at best. My vanguard shoots better groups just as fast at triple the distance. For like $ I would do a cdl or vanguard and drop it in an edge...with $ left over and a better shooter. For the $ a mark v costs I can build a custom.

There is a new model: the S2. It is guaranteed sub MOA and reasonably priced. It might be worth a look.

It is true that in general the Mark Vs are not as accurate as the Vanguards.

I comparied the .270 WSM and .257 Weatherby Mag and after looking at muzzle velosity, balistics and down range energy between the two they are very similar. The .270 is pushing a heavier bullet and out to 500 yards is hitting harder. You save a few bucks going with the .270 ammo vs. the .257 ammo. Any good recommendations on the two.
-
What recommendations are you looking for tony, the ammo or the guns. I love the 270wsm and just bought another one a few weeks ago. It is a great gun for any animal around here. I would go 270wsm over the 257wby.
-
I have not had a 270wsm break 3300 with a 130 yet. I have had 2 257roys and a 2bit that break 3600 with a 100gr bullet. I love the 277 guns, but I would not pass a Roy for one.
-
absolutely. i watched a freind of mine flatten a cow elk at 300 with one. shooting 120 gr. partitions. one must reload this cartridge or refinance everything you own to buy ammo.
-
Well I dropped the hammer and picked up the .257 Weatherby Mark V. I topped it off with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14x44, Z-800 reticle. Now I just have to head out and see how it shoots.
-
Sweet set up! I want a custom .257 someday. Let us know how it shoots! Definitely try to work up some hand loads for that thing.

-
Sweet setup. You won't be disappointed. Working up a load is a must in my opinion.
-
Nice! That rifle is sweet! Let us know how it shoots! I would be looking at a load with 120gr Nosler Partitions!
-
dude ur gunna love it.. i have 2 weatherbys and wont buy anything else! great choice
-
I have a 257 wby accumark and have been using 110 grain accubonds and have had good results.
-
Spanks them ..... :yeah:
-
Sweet rifle. I think a Barnes bullet would be in order for a speed demon like that.
-
Outstanding caliber, Roy Weatherby's personal favorite. Will kill deer reliably at short or long range, we have killed two moose with the 257, and today we killed another bear with a 257 WTBY.
-
The ballistics dont lie its a flat shooting gun only down fall I see is cost to shot it. My next gun will me a imp 25-06.

If you are going to imp it, you may as well go Roy. One pas through the sizer and 7mm REM brass is 257roy. Only diff is, you will have 60 gr capacity in an imp, and 75 in a roy
-
I've owned two, They will definitely flatten deer, along with anything else that gets in their way! You won't be disappointed with the gun, and if you reload, they're not so expensive...... Compared to my 300 RUM at least :o
-
I was able to pick up 4 boxes of the Federal Premium 115gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claw for $25 per box. I grabbed 4 boxes at that price. Hopefully those will be a good deer round.
-
I have always shot weatherby. I have been shooting my 257 weatherby mag Mark V ultralight for a couple years now. I mostly shoot accubonds out of it. I just call it my laser gun. Sight it in right, all you have to do is point. You will never be disappointed. Makes me sad cause now my 300 wby mag Deluxe just sits in the safe :(
-
Had one, inherited, only reason i don't now is a closer relative to the deceased asked to have it. Nothing in the lower 48 I would not be confident shooting with a 100+gr partition-type bullet.
-
I love my mark v, only thing i dont like about it is the weight. Best loads i have found so far are with 100gr nosler ballistic tips (about .75 moa) and bergers (.25moa) i wouldnt recomend either of those bullets for close range shots though.
-
Marginal at best, waaaay overrated!! grin
-
It won't work on Salamanders. Grin
-
havnt heard the term salamander neck since the good ole days at BTC :chuckle:
-
Yep its a Judism.
-
Great caliber although im not a weatherby fan.. Set it on top of a rum case now were talkin!!! lol... I used the term salamander neck last year over here and boy did i get some strange looks..
-
Laffin, yep the ol btc days. You can bet your azz I'll be lookin for a salemander neck ripper the last few days of general!!
Jess, I like that idea too, maybe shorten the RUM case? Think ya oughtta build one!! Later guys
