How far do your deer normally run after being shot with an arrow? I'm sure the distance has a lot of factors but, a nice average would be nice. Lung shot distance? Heart shot distance?
I ask because our HOA won't allow hunting and I've got a lot of really nice deer in my yard daily. I'd like to harvest one but, if I have to worry about it running into an unfriendly neighbors yard, it's probably not worth it.
-
50-150 yards
-
Yea, don't put your housing at risk just to shoot a deer. It's not worth it.
-
Crap. A .308 headshot would do it. Probably attract a bit of attention though
-
if it is charged with adrenaline and you bump it, it could go a LONG ways. if it is unaware why it feels dizzy it may tip over right there.
-
i have had them run 150 yards before or had them drop right where they stand, the doe I shot yesterday dropped where she was at. when I cleaned her out I discovered the right lung was a clean slice across and the left lung exploded and I was pulling pieces of it out(this could be from the arrow breaking not sure). It's hard to tell what they will do when that arrow makes impact, the only way I know to make sure they do not move at all is a spine shot, but the deer does not die instantly from a spine shot and will probably bellow and complain until you finish it.
-
Whack one of those suckers. And lets see some picks. HOA will just give you a warning.
-
every animal is different. I just liver shot a mulie buck in Oregon and he went 15 yards and bedded :dunno: just never know
-
many < 25 yards several over 100. With a double lung normally they will run 25 yds, stop, look back and fall over dead. Heart could be 100 yds or more.
Easier to get forgiveness than get permission. Wack one and let us know
-
Heck if it runs off and bleeds out on your neighbors porch you can just volunteer to help them clean up the mess and dispose of the deer. They don't have to know you arrowed it too
-
I blasted a deer through the heart and both lungs once, with a .308 150 grain soft point. It ran maybe 25-50 yards and dropped dead.
If I could get a good shot at 20 yards and you're very confident you can hit both lungs and the heart, I'd probably take it.

Nope. I'm on the $1000 per incident fine level now. They don't like what I do with my property.
-
$1k incident fine?

That's gonna be one expensive deer!!!
Hope it tastes good. :chuckle:
-
I guess it depends on the relationship with your neighbors, how big your property is, how tall the fences are, and how close knit the HOA is. My guess is the intent was to keep gunshots out of the 'hood.
-
$1k incident fine?
Yup. If I so much as do something stupid like leaving a black bag of garbage next to my garbage can before garbage day, it's $1,000. I hate it here.

this morning my best friend shot a spike with his bow and it is at 40 pounds at a 24 inch draw he hit it on a dead run at 10 yards it when 40 and piled up :IBCOOL:
-
Funny thing is, 75% of the people that live here hate the deer and complain that the deer have overrun the place and are destroying everything in their yard.
-

:yike:
-
he missed it at 50 and it ran towards him its his first buck hes only 13
-
I can honestly say I've never had a deer, elk or bear go anywhere close to 100yards when I've done my part with the arrow. I even single lunged a buck shooting straight down out of a treestand and he only went 40 yards and layed down within site of my tree. Just gave him time and he never got out of his bed. If you make a good heart/lung hit and do not push them, they are not able to go very far.
-
:yeah: Ditto
-
the deer i shot last year was in mid jump turn at ten yards and he didnt go ten yards. my avatar is that deer.
-
That deer will run to the neerest cover before.it beds down. It won't Ned down in your yard. Or it will run for cover and fall over dead.before it gets.there. :hello:
-
last years doe, my first blacktail-shot double lung with 3blade 125gr muzzy- went 40 yards. with whitetails, even with mechanical 1 1/2" cut broadheads i've had them go 150, but most wont go more than 100yds, and an average for me would probably be 75 yds, and i've killed maybe 10 with the mechanicals, more with muzzy, or similar shape 3 blade broadhead. dont know about heart shots, as if i do that with the bow its an accident.
-
Man I do not know what to say on this one ... :dunno: years ago I would say my average was 50 to 100 yrds BUT Lately I have watched just about every deer or elk I have shot die right before my eyes ...like take a few steps and fall over ....No joke ... So is it shot placement -- having a faster bow--- or back to this again :chuckle: THE WASP BROADHEAD ..... I would say them all :yeah:
-

Exactly why I would never purchase a home with a HOA. My property... not yours! Shut up, go away and don't look if you don't like it. :mgun: HOA's
-
I havent shot any deer with my bow, but have shot a few elk and they haven't gone farther than 50 yards. Shot placement is the key. There isn't much hunting involved with shooting a deer in your yard, which takes away the fun of it, just my opinion.
-
Mine today only went 30' and buckled the problem I had was getting the other deer to leave the area, maybe they thought seeing a dead one was cool?
-
Last year i shot mine on the edge of a pasture, double lung shot jumped like 8 feet in the air and took up abot 10 steps layed down and was out in less than 3 minutes.
I would say key is stay dead stilland silent after the shot and avoid moving in to find him. if you know you whacked him just stay put and wait 5 minutes. odds are he will still be really close.
My :twocents:..

It amazes me... I think that WT shot with rifle run farther than if with bow.. Shoot'm with rifle and they don't stop running until they're in the next county. (except my last one.. I broke his spine.) That said, I haven't had a Blacktail go more than 30yds. But, I did have one go that far, and it took me 2 hours to find him! Did have a Muley go about 80yds and crawl under a low Pine.. wan't easy to find him.

Im guessing its cause there is no loooud bang followed by blinding pain, with a bow its silent and then owwww wtf off i'm getting sleepy...
-
I missed a doe last night, and she actually came back to sniff the arrow. She was uber alert, and I couldnt even notch another arrow before she bolted. :bash:
-
Out of dozens of critters, never had a deer or elk go more than 60 yards when hit with an arrow. Most are within 30 yards before lying down. I hit one bull that stood there for 5 minutes, lay down and went to sleep within another 10 minutes. He never moved an inch from where I stuck him. It happens alot with some folks where they run like hell. It isn't worth the risk is you are in close quarters, plus who wants to shoot a neighborhood pet and risk it dying in someones yard?
-
Just put some apples in your driveway and run over the buck with your hunting rig.
-
Tough call on an average, it really depends how you hit them and the angle of the shot. Most importantly is if if you bump them they can go a long ways before laying down.
If you are in tight quarters, and it is not too hot, give them 3 or 4 hours if you can, an hour at minimum, (assuming you don't see or hear them go down immediately), they will usually lay down pretty quick and stay put.
The last four I took with my bow were:
1/4 Away, I got 1 lung and the diaphragm: 60 yards
Broad, Through the neck just above the shoulders: 400 yards (I made a mistake and bumped this one)
Broad, through both lungs: 30 yards
Broad, pass-through the liver: 200 yards
-
Had deer go from falling right away, walking 20yds and going down, running 40yds and going down, running 200 yds and going down. I've hit them they run 20ft stop and look at the smaller buck behind them, "like why did you just horn me?" and go down. The other bucks look and get tired of waiting for him to wake from his nap and go away. Shot a bear that went 50yds. Shot an elk at 60yds it was looking back at me 1/4ing away, I shot for his chest and his face got in the way, went right under the eye and out the back of his skull, the arrow stuck in the loge he jumped over and died just on the other side.

Avg run on whitetail with bow: 75 yards.
Avg run of whitetail with rifle: 3 rickety steps.
Avg run of whitetail with my 4" bull-barreled Ruger MarkIII with suppressor and subsonic ammo to the eyeball out my bedroom window that never took another step & never woke the wife: Priceless.
When am I coming over for a sleep-over?
-
Man, it sure sounds like you have pissed off the neighbors! Sounds like they need to but out and mind their own damned business. I would probably be in the same boat you are in if I lived in your neighborhood. May I ask what you did to get their panties all up in a bunch?
-
average deer mileage after being shot
You want the distance in miles?
OK, well, the calculator says 0.014205 miles, on average, is how far they run.

I don't know if I would be sharing that kind of info on a public forum :twocents: Just saying....

mine seem to run at least 300 yds. I tend to get excited and not make the best shots in the world. I think I am a pretty good tracker now
