Well my elk season starts on Friday and I will be tagging along with some buddies and haven't been with them scouting and am pretty much going in there blind. Just wondering what I am to expect and if there are any good bulls in there. My buddies has told me there is but just wanna see what you guys have seen there so far.

lots of hunters, and the bulls are pretty small, watch the clearcuts, most of the elk are in the thickest reeprod you can find

gonehuntin hit it spot on. lots of people. if you get a shot at a legal bull take it. and be prepared to do some walking. I have been hunting there my whole life and each year there are more and more people. we used to be one of the only camps set up there during archery season. not anymore, but I keep going back :bash:

ive never seen anything bigger then a 5x5 in there and most of the time i see 3's and 4's. but there is a good amount in there but you just have to be in the right place at the right time when some one else pushes them to you.

and don't forget a healthy dose of patience when hunting Winston

i was planning on hunting the winston again this year and a friend of mine said that the road behind the fishing bridge on the east end the lake is going to be closed all season..is this true? i was thinking that they would open it after labor day but i may be wrong.

Winston is a great unit. If you do not mind large crowds, rude people, oh, and Weyerhauser playing games with when the gates are actually locked or not.... or who gets to drive behind those gates..
Other than that, we killed a lot of elk in that unit. Usually about Tuesday after opener, when all the idjits have gone home.

That gate is supposed to be locked all seasons, it's a long walk in from there.

i would suggest calling weyerhausers hot line every hour. the tree farm and most of the state is under a red flag warning. as of 10 am sat they are still alowing non motorized traffic, but i seriously doubt that they are going to allow walk in access with the fire threat that NOAA is forcasting.

ok..thank you for the info. yea it is a very long walk from that gate to where i want to hunt. ill just have to come up with a plan B.

Scouted with my dad two weeks ago and saw 3 good bulls hanging out together. One 4x4, 6x5, and a monster 8x9... he was an awsome 6x6 with 3extra long "spider" points on his left and 4 on his right!

you whould not believe where he was... I could of almost thrown a rock to pavement.

Have a cow tag for this unit and went down last week to sniff around saw one rabbit and a chipmunk out side of all the gates. WDFW sent me a post card said they will be sending more info about what gates are going to be open during the season. Nice area have never been there before, but it sounds like a pretty popular unit. Hoping for the best will be able to hunt mid week, so sounds like that will be a better time to hunt. Only Elk we saw were at NW Trek wish I could draw that tag :chuckle:

A number of whoppers come out of Winston every year. The overall number of big bulls to number of elk probably doesn't differ much from other units though. There are just so many elk in there that a few big ones are bound to bite the dust each season.
