Title: Going to sit in my blind all night.
Post by: highside74 on September 03, 2011, 05:27:17 PM: I have a small piece of property to hunt on and I have a dandy Blacktail that has been coming to my spot on a regular basis. The problem is I bump them every morning going to my blind and he never show's back up. I have pictures of him 20 min before I show up at 4:30 to 4:45. He was also on the camera on the 30th and 31st after 6am. His friends come back which are a spike a 2x2 and a 2x3. But not him. he is a 5x5 including his eyegaurds. probably 120's. I can't figure any other way but to sit all night. So I will. Wish me luck.

Have you tried getting in your stand in the late afternoon and sitting till dark?

If he is coming in before dark and you are there well before daylight, he will more than likely either pass on by in the dark or whiff you and never show during shooting light. Evening might be your best bet.

I'd be worried about scent, but bumping him out of there in the morning isn't going to be any more productive?

The cam would show if an evening hunt was worth it

But then, at my age, my own warm bed is more appealing than a night in a cold blind! :chuckle:

Looks to me kinda like his velvet hanging off. Definatly a dandy buck, well worth sitting up for all night.

I'm am showered and clothes are washed in scent free soap and on my way out now. Hope my next post will have me and a dead buck in the picture.

:yeah: Even with calm air, the drift of the air will be downhill. And even with the funky soaps and sprays, you still have to breathe! Hope ya do good, though.

Post by: Malardman on September 03, 2011, 10:04:32 PM: I believe it all boils down to right time right place, all the blacktails I have watched have been evening till dark 7PM-10:30PM it was just luck of the draw I caught mine before he bedded down for the day, shot mine at 7:20am and the deer I got had never been seen in the morning hours before :twocents:

Buddy of ours spent two weeks in the hospital after breaking his neck from a fall of 10' out of a stand. Many have not been so lucky. Good luck, be safe!

Post by: GrainfedMuley on September 04, 2011, 05:47:52 AM: Sitting upright with your back against a tree is going to be very tough. Unless you use my tree stand. A "Tree Lounge". VERY comfortable. I have sat in my stand for 14 straight hours. A couple of hours before day light until sunset. Even took a nap in the middle of the day. I have ALL the bells and whistles including a roof pads, rails and yes a pillow. :chuckle: I shot a real nice 5x5 Whitie on the edge of a wheat field in NE Lincoln County. Just remember, it's guna get cold after the sun goes down. Bundle up, when your not moving it get chilly!

I know it's still early in the morning, but like I said it's a small piece of property about 4 acres and they only use the back half. So they are either there or they aren't. You can hear them go in and out of the blackberry's and you can hear them crossing the fence so I knew for they last 3 hours that I sat there and froze my you know what off that it was a lost cause. I think my biggest mistake was trying to bundle in layer's that were to noisy. Every time I shivered or moved my leg or caught my self falling asleep it was like I was telling every deer that I was there. :bash:I knew as soon as I sat down that the close I had on were all wrong and they still weren't warm enough, holy buckets I was cold. Oh well I gave it a go.

In my younger days I have been known to sleep overnight in an aluminum driftboat while it gets to freezing just to get the best postion on a hole for kings. Staying out overnight takes determination for sure. I'll 2nd the idea of the wool blankets. Those things are amazing in cold weather.

Post by: PA BEN on September 04, 2011, 10:26:27 AM: I've spent the night in a ground blind before and any little noise will scare them off. It's cool to hear them when they come in. The wool is to keep quite if you rub up against the blind and a couple to rap your self up in too. It's no different then a tent, sleep on the floor get yourself in shooting position way before day light. Remember your there to keep from spooking them off when you come into your blind to hunt. BTW, they will bed down close so don't think there not there when you get up. So always keep quite. It will pay off. Good luck.

Post by: RadSav on September 04, 2011, 12:59:28 PM: Might be better once the days are a little cooler. I know they are working our areas later at night with this warm weather.

Is it just me? I feel like the hottest days of the year are on the archery elk opener the majority of the time. I sure miss the old days when our season was October 1-16th regardless of what days they landed on.

Last year we were not able to hunt in this spot because a couple guys spent the night in their pickup and were setting up when we arrived at 3 am.

This year we roosted the birds and went in and setup two blinds and the decoys. It rained all night, and was generally terrible. It paid off the next morning when two birds flopped out right in front of us and my buddy and I shot a double. My best bird ever at 22 pounds. We had two toms down by 6 am, so it paid off. I will do the exact same thing next year.

I will tell you, sleeping a blind is hardcore. It is miserable, I know exactly what that was like. Sorry it didn't work out, but its good to see someone giving it there all.
