Title: My hunt with the European guys
Post by: Machias on September 04, 2011, 10:17:32 AM
Man I had a blast Thursday and Friday.  Chris (from Germany) and Gunther (from Austria) arrived Weds night.  We loaded up the horse trailer and headed to Springdale-Hunters Road.  There was some private property off of Allen Road we were headed for.  The landowners have been seeing quite a bit of bear sign while out riding their mules.  The two guys spoke very good English and were both really into hunting.  They were over here for a Wedding in Seattle on Sat.  We only had a day and a half to hunt.  Super nice guys!!  They told me about hunting wild boars in Germany and the hunting in Austria.  We hunted pretty hard Thursday morning, called two locations, but did not see anything.  Didn't see as much sign as I was hoping, so we loaded up and drove to an area near Sullivan Lake.  Hiked in about 4 miles, mostly up and finally found a few huckleberries still around and found fresh bear scat.  But did not have anything come into the calls.  Made it back to camp around 2145, beat.  Got up early Friday morning and was back after it.  We hiked in about a mile, it was very dusty, no sign, called again, nothing.  I hiked back to get the truck and when I got back they told me they almost got a shot at three grouse.....luckily they did not get a shot since it was three hen turkeys.   :tung:  We headed to another area and saw three coyotes on a dead cow.  Hiked in a short distance and found fresh bear scat and called two more times.  Nothing.  So they really wanted to shoot a .44 mag handgun, so we fired a few rounds, they really liked that!!  They had to get back for the wedding so we headed back and packed up the camp.  They brought me a bottle of German Schnaps and a nice silver flask.  I am going to go to Germany in Jan 2013 and hunt with both of them, full traditional hunt.  I can't wait!  Made two new friends.  It was a great experience.

Glad it all worked out. That's a long way to come and logistics can get snafu'd. Good luck on your hunt in January. Will that be a boar hunt? ....sounds tasty!....  :EAT:

Getting them out there after bear was great!

Too bad the bear didn't show up, but still, great effort.

Sounds like a good time. Sure they will go back to Germany with good things to say about American Sportsmen. You're a good Ambassador for Hunt WA Fred!

I am sure the hot weather did not help the hunting much.

Hey no problem, I understand completely.  They are coming back at the end of Sep next year for a week and we are going to bait bear in Idaho.  I'll have two baits going strong when they get back over here.  Yep I'm going to go after boar over there.  Gunter is all into the traditions, he spoke about the ceremonies just like Addicted posted about on his hunts in Germany.  Should be an outstanding experience.

I actually wasn't too bad up around Sullivan, down around Springdale it was cool in the mornings, bright sunny days but warmed up pretty darn quick.

Make sure you have the get the information from Gunther about what you "training" you have to have to satisfy the jaeger laws...their firearms/hunting rules are different from ours (at least in Hesse where I was stationed).

Wild boar is TASTY....(long story, sledge hammer, range 42, Grafenwehr, 1975 or so....)

I bet you are stoked for the Boar hunt.   That sounds like fun.   I heard it froze in Springdale a couple nights ago.

Yea it was pretty chilly Weds night.

Will do, they are going to let me know everything I need to get done and bring.  I'm taking the wife as well, it'll be a neat trip.

That is pretty cool. There is alway more to the hunt than the kill.  It is always better to be around good people and make new friends.  The kill is just a bonus.

Great Job Machias.   I hope you are treated to a great Keiler while you are out here.  Do you know roughly where you will be hunting?  Winter boar hunting out here is a great experience.  The Bache (Sow) you see in my profile photo was taken during a traditional German drive hunt.

No Josh she was not the LeitBache.  lol. :chuckle:

Just remember to not shoot the bigest bache.  That is considered very bad form out here because she is the future of that group.  She will teach all other pigs where to search for food and how to search for it.

I have hunted with a German friend of mine before and he slings his rifle the exact same way as that photo.  Pretty fast way to bring it up.

Lots of tradition in German hunting techniques.  The guy I hunt with is very interested in shooting an old animal.  One that is well past it's prime.

Chris lives near Andover, Germany and Gunter is in Vienna, Austria.  I believe we will be hunting near Andover.  They were telling me about which pig to shoot.  I will go over there and pay attention and listen to their advice.  It'll be a great experience!
