Title: velvet bull 560 unit
Post by: elkoholic on September 13, 2011, 11:01:22 AM: ok this is a wierd one.. saturday we had a bull come in and at first glance thought he was a spike because he was in full velvet, he turned and saw he was a small 4pt.. why does he still have velvet?? I know I have seen does with headgear in october with velvet left but this guy was sporting like late july velvet, not showing any signs of coming off at all.. oh by the way I missed him at 40 yards (deflection)... we have had 1 other bull come in but didnt want to play enough to get to bow range..

I don't know why a bull elk would still be in velvet, but it doesn't seem like it is that unusual. It's only a couple weeks later than you would expect so I'm not too surprised. But, you say you've seen "does with headgear"? Now THAT is unusual. Especially since you said "does" and not just one single "doe". I have never seen a doe with antlers, that I know of.

Post by: GoldTip on September 13, 2011, 11:32:41 AM: I have also heard of naturally castrated bulls like that as well, but did see a moose this past weekend with not a scratch on his velvet and my Dad is still seeing whitetails and Muleys back home in Montana in full velvet as well.
