Just got home and can't wait for the shower, after a week of hellishly hot hunting finally got it done today. First off, props to my Mrs for being the best hunting partner, outfitter, wrangler and tracker anyone could ask for. Hunted 6 days and today turned into an eight hour run from trigger to trailer and am also so proud of my little mustang for packing it all out in one load.
Spent my first morning ever in a tree stand. Never thought of my 300+ lbs being high in a tree on a little platform was a good idea but desperate times call for desperate measures. Yesterday we decided to though up a stand over a great trail in a swampy bottom looking down on a fresh wallow. After a somewhat scary climb in the dark I found myself in the tree with great anticipation. Shortly after 7 this lone spike wandered down the trail and it was text book, stopped behind a tree so I could stand up, then stopped behind another so I could draw and then stepped out broadside at 26 yrd. Perfect shot and blasted off into the timber. Radio'd the Mrs back at camp to feed the stock and grab my pack and make her way to me. Once she showed up I set her on the blood trail (practice for her mod bull tag). She followed it 100 yards straight to the bull and then the work was on. Between the two of us we had it in quarters in no time and headed back to camp to ready the horses. We then rode back in picked it up and the race was on to get back to the trailer at the trail head.
Nice little bull and will create lots of great meals for the family.

Congrats Ron...you got it done. Did you pick up the trusty new steed from over here...the one by me?
-
Nice elk...seems like it had a lot of velvet yet???
That will make some fine eating, any trouble with the heat? Sounds like you did a fine job of getting it cooled off.
Thanny.

Yes I did. However, he is still in training and sat this one out. My sick horse after medication pulled through ok. He is the black one the mrs is riding in the pic, (lighter load LOL :chuckle:)

Just starting to loose his velvet, no issues with the heat. We tagged and bagged him very fast and got the meat temp down quickly in the dark timber. We set the quarters on sticks over a running creek while we went for the horses. Acted like a refer unit and chilled the meat enough to get it without issue. Except for the fly parade we had tag along.
