Title: Back from SD summer camp (picts)
Post by: jetjockey on September 16, 2011, 06:35:41 AM
I just got home from summer camp near Winner SD last night.  My dad picked his pup up, and I left mine there for the fall trial circuit.  Its a ton of fun getting to go out there and watch some of the best brittany's in the country do their thing.  The amount of birds a dog will see in one summer is priceless.  My dads dog went from a young pup to a bird finding machine.  She is a special dog, and has an UNBELIEVABLE nose.  I watched her get birdy yesterday and we could see the birds....Over 150 yards away!  Ive never seen a dog get birdy that far from the birds before.  The trainer was telling my dad he has a once in a lifetime dog.  Would have been nice to see what she could have done on the trial circuit..........  There were a ton on pheasants, and up until saturday or sunday, a ton of sharptail and chickens as well.  Unfortunatly, the shaprtails and chickes moved out and we only found a single here and there.  Last friday they had over 30+ chicken and sharptail finds.

Young pheasants.  In the evening, or morning, we would count several hundred driving from Winner to camp and back.  In that area there is supposed to be about 8 pheasants per mile according to the SD DFW.  If thats true, 8 pheasants per mile is a lot of birds, because we saw a heck of a lot more then that.   It was uncommom if we didnt see hundreds of pheasants each night while running dogs.

Yep.  TN walkers with tropper saddles.  We ran the older dogs off horses and some of the younger ones out of the truck, and off 4-wheeler.  Typically, they train the younger dogs on the pheasants and then move to the open prairies with the older dogs off horse.  We were supposed to combine it with a sharptail and chicken hunt but nobody realized the season didn't open until this saturday.  We all thought it was last saturday.  Oh well.  We wouldn't have killed many anyways, and they don't really taste good either.  I would love to have a couple mounted though.  That would be cool IMO.

Thanks for the compliments on the dogs.  The really orange one in the first dog picture is my dads.  She is NICE!!!!  The brit in the full body picture with roan is mine.  The last one is a sister to my dog from a different litter.  Looks like that is going to be a nice litter as well.  We've been pretty lucky with her.  She's been a hell of a hunting buddy and done pretty damn well as a field trial dog.  Hell, the entire litter that has stayed with the trainer has been pretty darn good.  Possibly the best pup from the litter went to a hunting home and never got the chance to trial .  Of the three still trialing, two were FC's before they were 3 and both dogs are in the top 25 in the country in Gun Dog points.   The other pup is coming along a little more slowly but he placed in his futurity and had adult placements before he turned 2 1/2......   Pretty sure he'll be a FC as well before its all over.
