Title: eastside bear?
Post by: bankwalker on June 28, 2008, 08:39:26 PM: what kind of terrain do you guys look for when hunting bear?

this will be my first year hunting them and i plan on hitting it hard. and double this time as scouting season for elk and deer.

i have stumbled across a few tracks here and there but they have been in all types of terrain. so i really have no idea where to start looking.

i have never seen any other good areas that have some good berry patches.

Here's a couple Tacoma Pass,Blowout Mtn,Pyramid Peak,Naches pass.

Post by: bowhuntin on June 28, 2008, 11:09:56 PM: Those are good areas that G.R.K gave you from what I have heard. Never really hunted bear, but I have heard to look in clear cuts. Glass a clear cut, if you see nothing move on to the next one and do the same. There are a lot of clearcuts and probably some berry patches also around Pyramid Pass and other mentioned locations.

Bears don't like the heat, with thier big black furry coats. I look for deep dark canyons that have cricks running through them.

I've usualy scouted the area a couple years in a row, know where there is such an area, with thimble berry patches early on, that open to huckleberry patches later on, or at least close by in an adjoining valley. Watch for recent sign such as scat, or better yet tracks.

Bears will only stay in the area as long as the food holds out, then they will move on. They are funny in some areas, they won't totaly decimate the food supply, they will just move on. Kinda smart if you ask me, don't know what you call that kind of response...?

Old apple orchards are a BIG hit (quite a few of them around too!). When you see crap that is as big around as a soda pop can, you know you found the bull of the woods's area, and he won't be too scared of you, but its all about timing.....and MINE sucks! I'll try and take a pic of a pile that big with a cartrige as a comparison...I always forget about my camera..... :rolleyes:

i went scouting/sighting in my rifle today. found alot of promissing elk sign, some good deer sign. AND even some bear track along the river where i was. but then my friend wanted to tan for alittle bit and what she wants she gets so i used that time to sight my rifle in although i payed more attention to what was going on behind me. ;)

Post by: bankwalker on June 29, 2008, 10:32:53 PM: yup it was very very distracting...and no i didnt get sighted in...i got a great group and about 50yds. but it was to hot and my barrel actually burnt my hand after 10 rounds.

ill wait to go to the range with my friends dad and get it done the right way. when i know the actual distance and not just guessing.
