Title: Savage barrel swaps.
Post by: MountainWalk on June 28, 2008, 11:58:29 PM: Anyone ever here of this or had this done with your Savage bolt action 110 series?
Supposedly, this is a pretty easy swap out. You can unscrew your barrel and purchase another barrel. They are also suppose to be very easy to attach and headspace.

Post by: addicted on June 29, 2008, 02:54:46 AM: yup i talked with one firearm shop owner about it and the way he put it it was very easy. i asked another Q and he said that with a gunsmith doing it you could probably techinically replace the barred on a 243 with a barrel from a 308 or a 7mm08 barrel in order to change the calliber of the gun since they have the same size casing.

What do you want to know about changing barrels. You Do Not need to have a gunsmith do it. I change barrels a lot on my Savage rifles . And also have a couple of Stevens rifles that I change barrels on. If you want to do it on the cheap you can use new unfired/sized cartridge case (not a loaded round just the case).
You will have to have a barrel nut wrench .

You can make your own action wrench out of a hardwood 2x6x8" drill a
1 5/16" hole in the center of the 6x8 side, drill a 1/2" hole on each side of the 1 5/16" hole on the 2" edge saw the block in half through the center of the 1 5/16" hole so you have 2 pieces 3"x8". Get some 1/2" all tread with 4 nuts and flat washers , to clamp it all down tight on your action right behind the barrel nut . [bgcolor=#ff0000]DO NOT try to use a internal action wrench to take the nut off the first time!!![/bgcolor]
If you savage is a older one with only one hole in the nut you can make a wrench to fit it or find a spanner wrench if you are lucky.

Post by: catwithboost on June 29, 2008, 01:45:14 PM: Well I just got home from picking mine up from the gunsmith. I had my Savage 243 model 11 swapped out to a heavy flutted barrel 243. I would take it to a gunsmith so they can set the head space correctly. It cost me $85.00 to have it done.

You need to have the sights installed after the barrel is head spaced as they never line up right other wise. Sights never seem to line up on top.
After you have a barrel installed and then the sights you can keep a fired brass for your gage , and it works OK.
