Title: Lewis River rifle rut hunt
Post by: elkontherun on September 23, 2011, 03:29:16 PM
Well it is over way to fast. Turkeyman myself and my cousin packed into the Mt. Adams wilderness last friday morning we set up camp and started scouting.  We covered lots of ground friday saterday and sunday scouting and didnt see any elk that I was looking for.  We did find several wallows and natural mineral licks.  Monday morning was the opening day for my tag we left camp early and went up high we spent all day hiking calling and looking and didnt see a single elk.  Tuesday morning we decided to head into those wallows and mineral licks that we had found earlyer in the week.  Turkeyman was calling for me and at around 7:00 in the morning we finally had our first answer to his calls.  The bull was getting farther and farther away as we called to him.  So my cousin decided we needed to get closer and pressure him.  We chased after him and called, he answered, we chased after again and called and he answered. The third time we chased after him he finally realized he was going to have to fight to keep his cows and started twards us.  We seen him through the timber but there wasnt a shot.  After a few cow calls and one imitated chuckle he steped out at 53 yards.  He looked like a moose standing there.  He was wide and I knew he was at least a good 5 point so I shot.  At the shot he jumped and took of running.  After a few high fives and hugs we decided to go look for blood we got to where he was and ther wasnt any blood or hair.  Thats when I started to worrie.  The bull was taking 10 feet a step and not a drop of blood.  After following tracks for about 70 yards we found two drops of blood.  I looked up and there was my bull 10 feet away.  It was the best hunt i have ever been on.  I would like to thank mystep dad aka turkeyman and my cousinLarry Sides who I couldnt have done it without. My bullet went in high through the front shoulder angled down took out both lungs and didnt exit. I cant beleve that my 300 Win mag didnt go all the way through him.

Nice bull and hunt, and pics too.  Don't worry about the 300's penetration, at close range most higher velocity cartridges don't penetrate far.  I've seen 300's at 30 yds not make it through a deer broadside, but slower 3006's go clean through elk at 300 yds.  Go figure.

I'm a little confused on your post but i have hunted Lewis River my whole life, and didn't know the boundary's went into the Mt Adams wilderness area, correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes the Mt Adams wilderness is inside of the lewis river gmu 560. Just take a minute and outline the unit according to the hunting reg area discriptions use a forest service map or go buy a gmu 560 map!

Glad to see you killed a bull up there. I spent the first two weeks of archery season camped where you are at, packed in on the horses. Didnt hear a bugle and saw 3 elk. We walked and hunted our butts off. Did you see the burn just below your camp? We were in our tent when the lighnting struck and started the fire. Good job.

Ya loved those potatoes. I would have thought you bow hunters would of had a good hunt. We seen alot of 1 week old sign. Some huge rubs in those meadows behind camp. Was there alot of bow hunters up there?

Ya those were my potato's. There were rubs all over the place. Where did you kill the bull? Below camp? There's a wallow and mineral lick down there and from the looks of the picture you were below that. Or you may have been across from camp between there and the main trail below?

Early hunting up there is hit and miss. We've been hunting that for 12 years and have found the elk are either there or they are not. Never very many. Never seen more than 10 in a herd, but that was like 10 years ago. There's some wall hangers in there but unless they are bugling, they are really hard to hunt.

Oh, and we saw one other hunter, about 1.5 miles below camp, and 1.5 miles from the main trail. We called him in on his way to his salt lick and ground blind.

We did see the burn. You must have pulled out fri morning cause we got there around noon fri and there was still a block of ice there. Killed my bull across from camp just above the main trail.  Can't belive you didn't see more elk there was just a ton of week old sign between camp and the reservation! Thanks for the spuds we ate mt house meals then we had fresh heart and fryed spuds!
