Well just got back from montana, had a blast got to talk to some bulls but none that really wanted to play the game, but I was able to bring back a torn meniscus.
Just got done with the ER, they were really friendly and trying to help me out until I told them I was going moose hunting on Friday, they gave me an ice pack and told me to have a good time.....

That sounds like a fun time. Good luck.

ouch!!
Seems alot of places out west have had real spotty elk talk this year..my area wasnt the same as usual
-
I just got back myself, we saw one bull, heard a couple cows and saw tons of wolf tracks. The elk just weren't talking with all the wolf pressure in my area. Last year we actually saw the wolves and the elk. This year we also saw a big black bear, a cougar and four skunks. What a bummer of a trip. Looks like I am looking for a new spot. We were bow hunting and when we talked to the taxidermist (my brother in law got a 5x4 whitetail) he said that in the first week of the rifle backcountry hunt there was only one bull taken.

I called in a pack of wolves when I was over there they came into a cow call. Was kind if eerie hearing them howl around me until I got back to the truck and got the 45. I went back up the mountain they would howl but not come in. We ended up seeing 3 black bear.

Man that sucks on the knee, take it easy.
I have the same report from Montana. Wolves, Elk not talking, no cows to speak of. But my buddy was able to connect on a decent 5x5. Overall pretty slow 2 weeks.

Just spent a week out there also. Saw and heard more wolves than we did elk. Tons of grizz scat also. I think we could count on one hand the number of bugles we heard over the week. It was really a let down as normally we hunt the Idaho side but got MT tags this year. We were pretty excited because normally in Sept. seems like all the screaming bulls are on the MT side, not so much this year. We put on nearly 80 miles trying to find them but they werent having any of it. Moose, bear, deer but no elk. Sad deal.

I'm heading over to MT for rifle season. What part of Montana were you guys hunting and seeing nothing but wolves? I'll be concentrating SE of Dillon, so just wondering if I'm in for the same thing.

It was not that area, I will tell you that, so hopefully you are good. Best of luck to you...

Yep, pretty much the same here. It was our first time hunting elk in Montana and maybe I was expecting to see and hear bulls coming out of the woodwork. The first half of last week was slow, then we packed up camp and headed to an area 1oo miles away and finally got into the elk. The bulls were only talking the first hour of the morning and the last hour in the evening. We ended up seeing 3 nice bulls. But I will put in again next year for elk.

We were in an area out along the border of Idaho and Montana in the NW out of Trout creek. Headed to central MT for rifle hunt opener. Hopefully there will not be as many or any wolves.

Its been really hot over here as well. Elk havnt been talking real good. Was 90 last weekend and suppose to be the same this weekend. Ive been out every weekend since it opened only had them going decent one of the weekends. Makes it really hard to get with in bow range of them :bash:

Hot weather had them shut up prety good over there. Spending countless hours patiently calling seemed to be the ticket though. :twocents:

got a text from my buddy over there saying the bulls are going nuts where I was a couple of days ago...... :o
-
I just got back from a 2 week trip over there. The hunting was terrible this year. Not only were they not talking and very skittish. But we didnt see the amount of elk we usually see. Very disapointing. :(

Weather, wolves or what do you think was the issue?
-
All of the above....Weather, wolves,
1. The weather was so hot that they just really weren't talking too much.
2. The wolves howling at us when we set up in a drainage, makes you pretty sure that the elk knew better than to pipe up.
Just my thoughts, and quite a few other locals and hunters in the area.

All weather where I was. They've learned to adapt with the wolves. A little less vocal, but that's expected. When they decided to get crazy, they did. Seemed like every 3 days in the evening.
