Why is it that every time I walk or ride my bike into an area, I end up running into quads/motorcyles/trucks? Anyone else been having this problem? Specifically I am talking about areas around Shelton, mainly Green Diamond and Port Blakely. The 800 mainline has had the gate open on some days, even if its closed both Kelly road and cougarsmith are open, but it says right on the gate its closed to motorized access, I imagine they are waiting until rifle deer to open it, as they have done in the past. Everyone I've talked to wants to just play dumb and say they didn't know. Last night the gate to the 800 line was closed, I still ran into some young kids in a Toyota, riding in the passenger seat was a kid I talked to 2 nights before... who said the gate was open and he didn't know he wasn't allowed back there. BS.
I know I sound like a whiney girl but I always follow the rules and do things the hard way, only to still get pissed on by other dip*censored*s who don't care.
-
I used to know a guy that just drove to fast to read the signs and I guess didn't care to. He would say "if they didn't want anybody in there, then the gate would be closed" and things like that. This was in the Dickey when he was asking why so many people were riding bicycles when the gates were open.

A buddy of mine is walking into his area this weekend, every year like clock work opening morning the quads go by, so he already called the security and and said look be here at this time on this day an I guarantee they will be rolling in, hopefully this year they will have a surprise waiting for them, road hunters always figure out a way to keep on road hunting. Funny this don't happen much during modern, however it would take brave man to ride in and piss off a bunch of rifle hunters.
-
I have never had this happen and ruin a hunt or a hike. I am sure it does, like many other things that hunters complain about. This seems to be the major bitch this season. (I'm sure tribal threads are to come.)
The answer if you want is to get the Number for the Sherriff's office or the Company who owns land, document all the information and turn it over. There is nothing else to do but deal with it or go somewhere else. By all means petition for stiffer regulation but what we have now isn't worth mentioning. I counted what could have been $2000.00 worth of Discovery Pass fines during archery. Not a single LE to speak of. So it goes.
The main problem is in Washington the Forest Service is totally anti ATV. Everything is closed and in the NE corner they seem to pretty much ignore the closers as the norm. The Forest Service needs to negotiate better. But they won't, so nothing will change.

Hell, that happens during modern more often than not.. if you have hunted Weyerhauser property much.... :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

That's mainly where all I hunt, your right though that Burma walk in gets it bad, not so bad behind silverlake, lately those walk in areas been open for modern anyways. Where I'm talking about is in Ryderwood, owned by Campbell Group, or is it Sierra Pacific, Melton road area.

I remember when I was younger and my dad and I were hunting near Chewelah and we walked in behind a closed gate. We were about a 1/4 mile in and a jeep goes cruising by us. We were pretty pissed and to make things worse, about a minute later and around the bend we heard gun shots. We couldn't believe it but we kept walking and ended up seeing the guys out looking for blood. My dad was trying to take the high road and teach me a lesson about being the better man so we asked them if they needed any help or anything and they said nope but they just missed one of the biggest whitetails either of them had ever seen! :bash: When we hiked back out we saw where they drove through the brush and up this little bank to get around the gate. What a bunch of pukes! :spank_butt:

I can't believe the nuts these people gotta have to pull that kinda stuff. When I was a kid we used to ride quads and motorcycles, a lot of it we did behind gates but we knew when hunting season came around to not be back there, not only for our own safety but just out of respect. I've had words with plenty of people, always keeping my cool and telling them what they are doing is wrong but they never seem to feel guilty.
Takes all kinds I guess...

Closed gates....open gates. Doesn't matter, It's all road hunting to me. I get off all of the road systems where you have no choice but to climb and hike during deer season and I never have this problem.
-
We have phones. Take a picture, take a plate. Problem solved.
I have never taken my ATV on public land hunting in WA. But, I also would not do the above. I don't think that motorized bozo's are the problem.
Now, UGLY PETA PUKES playing music and beating drums claiming that because they are there I can't hunt, that annoys me. People walking, I have seen GAME run to the next county. Rigs, GAME doesn't mind unless they stop and get out. (Gunshots would do it as well.)
I have seen Recreational Motorcycle clowns screw up Archery hunters, (Intentionally) I would not mind accept they were on illegal trails a ways off any legal road. (That was wrong.)
The Public Land Scene is crowded now days, even if everyone followed ethics and rules. And, people don't follow rules or ethics. Unfortunately, in Washington above many other States we are not going to work together to change for the good. We each have our specialties and our own likes and dislikes. Government and ANTI groups play us against each other. I'd recommend going farther away, even from locked gates to avoid all this drama. :twocents:

I agree but there isn't a lot of climbing or hiking that can be done around here unless you're on a trail or a road, at least to get to your spot. So goes blacktail hunting. :bash:
-
They're bad about it here in Timberlakes. GD had to come out and drop stumps where they created their own entrance to get behind the locked gates. I give it a year and they'll have soemthing else figured out.

Licence plates on vehicles? In Mason County? Yea, that'll be the day

I was about to draw back on what would have been the biggest buck of my life( 4 miles in) a few years back when a toyota came pulling around the corner on a gated road, all the gates were closed and they drove around them. I gave them a nice little talk!!!

I had issues with poachers driving in to spotlight on an area I managed that was closed to motorized entry. I hired a guy with a backhoe to put the biggest rocks he could handle in the middle of the fencebreak where they would drive into the fields. Unfortunately, the grass was so tall, the rocks couldn't be seen - just the closure signs on either side. It gave me a great feeling to visit a few days later and see pieces of grill and lens decorating the tall grass at the end of two abruptly ending tire tracks. I hope they spilled their beer all over themselves. :)
I also enjoyed replacing torn off plastic signs, with new signs backed with heavy industrial grease, that really sticky red stuff that is tough to get off, holds every bit of dirt and debris it contacts, and stains whatever it touches. :)

I really like your approach

When you see them in there with vehicles, and windows down, it is always advisable to say that you saw the game warden or security or sheriff in the last hour that was looking for motorized vehicle tresspassers due to previous reports. The look on their face will either change or they will tell you about the key and permission they have. When the look on their face changes, they usually turn around and head back for the gate.

One day about 5 years ago, they wrote almost 1500.00 worth of trespass tickets behind the 500 gate on Weyerhauser.... we laughed at one guy... he went bombing by us as we walked in... sheriff was sitting at the bottom of the hill already writing a ticket.. just waved him over too.... we walked by his truck chuckling...

Love this subject, it get spicy. *censored*s vs law abiding sportsmen. Talked to 4 different ML hunters this weekend alone and everyone of them has had an encounter with an *censored* riding behind gates and off the authorized trails. It's the never ending story.
-
I must be a weirdo, but I've had the opposite experience so far in WA. It seems like I run into road closures and blocked or gated roads where the maps and rangers say they continue on. I'm still new to the area though. I like to hike, so it's not a big deal.

Take a look at the 4-wheeler thread and you will quickly understand that ATV owners feel they are not getting a fair shake. They want you to just leave them alone and look the other way while they break the law. Norspeak even recommends going and hunting one of the wilderness areas so the ATV owners can "hunt" illegally without the risk of being turned in.

There is a cop in the Nile that thinks his *censored* dosent stink, and rides his quad up the hills he made trails in the past years. Archery season, and the guy hit a bull calf one year. When someone said something to him, he took off the next night.(made the junkie move, in less than 30min.) Then another year he had another out of state hunter kill a bear so he could tag it. The out of stater felt pitty on the bear cause it was a cub that had been mauled by a boar. Out of stater said he needs to be put down, so the cop says he wont shoot it, but would tag it. The out of stater got within 20yards(cause it was almost dead), and drilled it for the cop. Its not just citizens, its others doing wrong as well, when they think they are not being watched!
If my 63yr disabled father can walk(slowly), to get to our spot, so can he!
This trail he made, off road, is the main trail for a heard that goes to a bedding area 60yards away! This was established from the elk first for over 20 years, now its a quad trail, that shouldnt be there.

I would advise getting a bag of nails from the hardware store and carrying them with you. It all of a sudden becomes fun when you hear one coming.
I'm always looking for ways to make a bad situation better. :chuckle:
Believe me I'm always trying to think of ways to give them a couple flat tires. Problem is someone who is doing it the right way and walking in could get hurt, or one of the timber company employees could get a flat... not worth getting back at the quad and motorcycle guys at the risk of others.

I have however stuffed pop cans full of nails and put them in the trails around the gates left by the cheaters, not sure if it has worked but the cans always end up getting crushed :IBCOOL:
Ya, vigilante justice, cool. I am sure that H-W fully supports it. Hey, how about stringing a wire at neck level, that would be real cool. :bdid:
Throwing out nails on a road cause it has a locked gate, ever think LE might use it? You could be letting the Bad Guys you hate so much get away. Or, if someone is hurt ever think that EMS might need it to save a life. Naw, who cares they deserve it. How about Fire Fighters, if there is a fire and you drop nails you might trap them. That pisses me off even more! You guys are far bigger jerks than they are.
If you can't just report it then shut up. Join "Eyes In The Woods" and learn what you can do so YOU do not end up having your own record, might be worth a thought. That is unless you get off being I T toughguys, in that case, continue.

take pictures vehicle and tabs. yes atvs have them too. then be ready to testify. people on quads that refuse to obey the rules are the worst. I use atvs in legal areas to get around, much more economical than a truck. can be a great tool if used right. there are people on here that post pictures of elk dragged off the mountain with atv's. where there weren't any roads. le officers will be contacting them shortly

Apparently on National Forest land, that is legal. At least according to norsepeak (member on this site). You cannot ride an ATV on the roads but cross country is just fine.

no it nots legal in any of the 50 states. can you drive your truck anywhere you want to and not get a ticket. tne first ranger that catches you will have alot of fun. was told by one at evans creek atv area that the impound for that. then to get it back you have to pay a very large fine.
-
I for one denounce ANYONE taking the law into their own hand. This idea of spiking the ground is dangerous and flat out wrong. That moderators of this site allow it is unacceptable. Anyone who does it and if someone is hurt needs to be locked up for a very long time. Cans full of nails is a boobietrap. It should not be allowed to be discussed here any more than shooting someone. There seems to be a group on here baiting people to promote the idea of illegal ATV hunting. Illegal hunting is wrong, period. I know many more people who do not hunt & who ride illegally than hunt that way. It is not to promote or excuse those who do it. But, here we have hunters promoting something far worse than motorized trespassing, actively promoting popping tires on moving ATV's. When an ATV rolls they are very dangerous to the rider. That you guys say you actively spike roads, well, it makes me happy to know that LE watches this site. You guys are as bad (worse IMO) than any unethical hunter. I want you ALL locked up.

You need to do some research. I know Maryland is one state you can go anywhere offroad to retrieve game. They pay skidders to go in the forest to retreive moose. It is legal, and is done every year.
