Title: Buying a wall tent! Some help please.
Post by: toyman2 on October 02, 2011, 08:11:31 PM
Ok, got the wife a brand new car, so she is all happy.
Now to buisness. I want a Davis 12x14 wall tent with all the cool stuff ( angles & stove, etc ). The problem is im not seeing how they will ship it to me, said it wasnt available to ship to my home address. So option B is to go to warehouse sports and buy a Montana tent (with the same crap) for a little more but no shipping.
Am i missing somthing, hunting season is getting close and i would love to have a Davis tent but i wont wait to find out i cant have it last min..
I know what I want 12x14 witha window in the back, zipper door with screen and the flap, 5" chimny whole (i think), frame angles and the wood stove that matches.

Ok what am i missing or need to know or whatever, please give you thoughts.

You will love a wall tent when you get it. When I bought mine I made sure it had 5' side walls. Seen some with 4' and I sure like the higher side walls.

Had mine for two years now.  Great tent and setup.  As Right PLace stated, you can drive over and pick it up yourself.  Just south of Walla Walla.  Great people and great service!  And get the bigger stove if it fits your budget.  I upsized from the one they suggested.  This way, if you ever add a cook porch, you'll have a big enough stove to heat that as well.

Maybe has to be a business address to ship it to becuse it is so heavy the would send it truck freight  :dunno: ? If so I know a local business fairly close to you that you could have it shipped to.  ;)

If you haven't used search tempest to search craigslist it is pretty good. Searches whatever range you want. Did a quick search and there are a few tents around, one in Bend looks like a pretty good deal.

You might consider visiting Yakima Tent and Awning before you order if you are ever in the area.  If you are going to be in town on a weekend you can probably get their number and arrange for someone to come down to the shop when they are closed to show you their products.  You can visit their factory and see their products.  Their pricing is very good and I think the quality is very good too.  I bought my 12x14 with front and rear doors with screens at the Yakima sportsman's show a couple of years ago for a VERY GOOD price.  I had a minor issue with the corners on my tent and also wanted to add side windows the following year and it was nice to be able to drop it off and pick it up while visiting family in Yakima.  Just a thought.  I know Davis tents are high quality too but personally I wouldn't pay the added cost AND pay shipping.   :twocents:

Cool.  I'm not sure who "all the other manufacturers" that you checked with when you bought your tent last year though.  I know there are several people who have purchased from Yakima tent, many of them who now have 10, 15, and 20 year old tents that are going strong and their prices are a couple hundred dollars less, you can pick up in Yakima for less than shipping from Davis and if any repairs are needed or modifications (like adding windows, awning, cook shack, etc.) you can take it back to Yakima.  Not trying to argue at all but it might make sense to take a look at Yakima especially if you happen to be in the area.

Well first all to everyone and reallly allthe PM advice i got, thank you guys.
I ordered my first wall tent today I did so much research, checked about everything i could, asked a ton of questions. I got it from the Wall Tent Co.. got everything i wanted, top, frame kit, stove, screens, windows etc for about what i could afford.
I'm very excited, 1st year in a wall tent and my hunting partner has a big bull tag. Going to break it in right this year, got 12 days off work for elk season, other than 2 days for teaching a fire academy.
I can Bear hunt while its still Branch season till it becomes spike season. Oh hell yea, going to be a good year.
Got  a new cot and a camp chef big 2 burner stove 60,000btu.
only took about 7 years to get some of the big stuff i have always wanted

Ask Rick if your tent has the GOOD zipper in it.  I bought 2 from him 3 years ago and had to replace the zippers in both ends after the 1st year.  He sent me replacement zippers and Sas was able to put them in. Those tents are not US made. I set those up end to end to make 14X32 makes a roomy guided camp.

Not sure what the "good zipper" is, but they come with a Heavy duty YKK #10 zipper.

Post by: mtncook on October 04, 2011, 08:30:45 AM
Yes that is what the description said when I bought mine.  But the tents came with some wimpy little white plastic zippers that split easily.  Like I said Rick made it good with us but it was a little hassle.  The #10 YKK  are good black zippers.  Just saying know what you are getting upon delivery.

Bravo tents are by far the best quality tent you will find. He's in Camus, Wa. You won't need special coatings as he uses the highest grade MARINE grade canves and zippers. We looked over allot of tents and found several were made in China or just didn't use quality componets like good brass zippers so they can keep the price down.

Actually my hunting partner and I went with Davis Tent after looking at all the tent manufactures at the sportsman shows in Portland and Seattle last year and comparing prices and reviews online. With the options and tent size and frame angles we found that Davis was better priced. We paid right around a $100 for shipping from Davis, and I don't think I could drive to Yakima from Vancouver and back for much less than that.

I had trouble finding a good metal cutting blade for my chopsaw so I just bought the $6 mason blade at home depot and used it.  Ran through all my cuts in less than 20 mintes...with a little bit of the blade left.

sorry guys, i have all kinds of cutters. I'll be using a tubing cutter for a clean edge. I was thinking along the lines of measuring and stuff. I stepped up to the 4 rafter system, I bought 14 10ft pieces of 1" conduit, they only had 12 and i figured it may take 13. I guess they say it may shrink 1-3%. I dont want things so tight it breaks the zipper. Knowing me ill have to set it up and do things the hard way.

The way the weather has turned it may bbe too late, but when we first got ours, we layed it out and sprayed it down with water, then let it dry. Did this a couple of times. We still ended up cutting down the frame the next season.

With the entire setup, stove, stove pipe, tent, etc..  What was the total cost?
Title: Re: Buying a wall tent! Some help please.
Post by: toyman2 on October 10, 2011, 10:51:13 PM
I think around $1400.
does most of you guys use spark arrestor in the stove pipe? i used it for a couple burns and it seems about pluged up. in my opinion it appears to almost be more of a hazzard than having it, i think i wont be using a top for my stove and i think i figured out why the smoke wanted to come out of the stove instead out the pipe.
