Title: Santiam Unit?
Post by: JoeE on July 02, 2008, 01:07:55 AM
Has anybody on here hunted Elk in the Santium unit in Oregon? I was looking at an early archery hunt. I have never hunted that area before and any info would be appreciated. It is a huge unit and I don't know where to really begin in looking for a good area.Thanks.

Only hunted the alsea unit, sorry. My father owned property on the alsea river and we deer hunted it a lot. The elk there traveled in big herds, you would never see any resident elk. The elk would come in to his property, feed two weeks in his meadows until all the browse was gone & then move on never to be seen again. Kind of weird. I wouldn't mind going down but it coinsides with washington season to close.Good luck. Mike

Here's your tip.
South of Mt. Hood. Timothy lake to Olallie lake.

Good luck.

Second what wefoot said. Don't be shy to hunt right off highway 26.
