Title: Wyoming Deer Hunt
Post by: Arteman on October 05, 2011, 08:01:24 AM
My buddy and co-worker is taking off Friday on a DIY Wyoming Deer and Antelope hunt near Casper Wyoming.  He is hunting Antelope the first week and scouting for bucks during this time.  We been sitting down here looking at mags and getting on the net at work looking at bucks.  He keeps looking at all these big bucks that come from over there, just wondering for that general area what's a typical average buck your going see running around and what to expect even putting your time in and hunting hard.

I have hunted casper for a few years. Is he hunting private land or public?

Its hard to say what an average buck would be. There are areas up in the bighorns where the bucks are heavier more massive "mountain" type bucks, and areas down lower in the wide open country (like most of casper) the bucks are more "farm" type bucks, with lighter colored horns and a little more spindly. I'd say an "average" buck for the area is just a nice 20" wide 4X4 with eyeguards. Thats assuming you're asking about mule deer, there are a lot of whitetails in that area as well.

Kind of an impossible question to answer.  You can get really lucky and shoot a 190" from the road on the first day driving up to hunt, or you can wear out a pair of boots and only see a glimpse of a 150"er.  Personally, I'd choose the second route for his best chances.  Also, a trophy lies in the eyes of the beholder.  Maybe a 150" is his dream buck, pending other details of his hunt were as he dreamed.

Thanks guys for the info, I understand what you mean by it being kind of a unanswerable question being anything could happen while hunting.  Just was wondering if its a place where you could pass up a 20 inch spinly antlered 4 pt the first day and not regret it the last day, but even then that's an unanswerable question again.  Thanks again for the comments.

150ies would be respectable for areas northerly from Casper.  I've taken several from the area with a couple in the mid 160ies, with the best seen being in the 170ies.  Some of my neater bucks don't score as high but have great mass and character.
