Title: Elk shoulder mount - Opinions needed - Bugle or not etc
Post by: Griz231 on October 12, 2011, 09:40:19 AM
I'm going to have my elk shoulder mount done finally and I'm wondering what everyone thinks about their favorite style.

Straight or turned
bugle or not
Any other suggestions or pics of your mounts.

I have never really been a fan of a bugling mount. but that dosent mean its not for you its your trophy do want you feel is right.

Not straight, not bugling  :twocents:
Depends on the configuration of antlers and where you are going to put it.
Pics please  :)

Here's a pic of them. (long story)
Probably put it in my little cabin and have to have him turned to the right when looking at the wall.

Not a bugling mount fan either.
For me, the chosen location in the home is #1 with #2 being what interesting features he has an how that/they would be featured with the pose and how it relates to #1.

i think you are right about location for sure.  how my dad is holding them in the first pic is probably the best direction which would work on the wall i'm thinking and show the best side of the rack.
So i just need to figure out the bugle or not.

Nice bull..
FYI the way your dad is holding them is actually a left turn, the elk's left  :)
If you have a high ceiling, I like the head tipped down a bit...so the viewer can see the rack better.  :twocents:
Good luck! Gotta see it when it's done!

I meant to my right when looking at the mount.  Definitely post some pics.  I'm going to have Joe at A living memory taxidermy do it.

Which elk? Maybe I'm crazy but it doesn't look like the same set of antlers between the two pics...I'm asking because I don't know what side is better...

That's where the long story comes in.  It's the first pic.

So I killed my first bull 20 years ago when I was 12.  It was a nice 6x7, second pic.  They were stolen back in 98' from a friends barn in Montana.  I had to leave some horns behind when I moved out here and planned on getting them on the next trip. I think he sold em.
Anyway, that all sucks, but I do have a set of drops from a bull that was running with my bull in the same herd from that same year that my dad had a shot on and deflected a branch and hit him in the lower leg, he shook it off and walked away. We found the sheds the next spring.

I would like to have them mounted as my first elk because they remind me so much of my first year hunting with my dad.

I really like the pose that Charlie put to this one.  In a vaulted ceiling location, this would be sweet with the little bit of nose down look.

Griz231:
Talk to the taxidermist that you have chosen to do your work. Often times they can make modifications that will give you a one of a kind pose like this one.

As far as the style of pose that entirely up to you and what you like

Good luck

For me personally, a straight pose is boring, and artificial looking.  A slight turn, a sneak, or wall pedestal with closed mouth is the best.  Bugling shows the taxi's talent, (or lack thereof), but will probably grow old after a few years.  "elk standing in woods" is the pose that I like.  I also despise the open mouth snarling bears or cougars that look like they are about to rip your head off.  That would get old in about 5 minutes.  But to each their own.  Simple or dramatic, there are plenty of good taxi's here that can accommodate you!

i always pose my elk mounts exactly in the same position in which they were standing just before i shot them. i have a slight bugle mount no teeth showing, sneaks left and right, bull with head turned a little down with ears turned forward, straight mounts. its all up to you! im still waiting for a full head turn!

my mounts are high on the wall so its hard to get close ups. this bull i shot right when it was starting to bugle.

Cool, thank you.  i like the head down a bit.

this bull ran right in to my brother cow calling, he would walk about 5 yards stop and listen, he stopped at 20 yards and double lunged him

Man oh man you got some bulls hanging.  I love it.  I have to hand mine in my cabin over east.  Wife won't allow me to in the house.  :bash:

Both sides

Good deal, i'll post pics of my mount when its done.  I'm thinking I will do a left turn nose down mouth closed.  I think that looks cool.
