Title: Leaving in Morning for Moose Hunt. What Not to Forget!
Post by: brianb231 on October 14, 2011, 03:56:33 PM
Hey Guys,

I am leaving tomorrow for 7 days to try and get my Cow Moose . Some of you have already filled your moose tags this year. I know you were probably out in the field and had forgotten something that you wished you would of had either during your hunt or getting your moose out. So I figured I would ask what that something may have been to make my hunt a little easier so I am not wishing that same thing when I am afield.

Your thoughts and suggestions are welcomed.

I didn't do moose but if I did I would make sure I had 2 or 3 buddies to help pack out.

rope, nobody mentioned camera, might want some memories. snacks, energy bars, a moose is huge by large & takes a bit to dress out. after being bent over skinning, gutting for a while, I like to take a quick break & eat something while easing my back. might want to bring young back & strong pair of legs to get it out too!

Just got back from a successful moose hunt.  Be sure to have lots of rope, game bags, a good saw, camera and a few small tarps.  The one thing we wished we would have had was a good knife sharpener.  Moose hide is tough!  We usually always have a whetstone in the hunting pack, but it was no where to be found.

Good luck on your hunt!

hey everyone.

well, we have been climbing mica the past 3 days. it is a brutal hike. We have not seen a moose as of yet. Saw a herd of elk and a few turkeys and a few whitetails. The only thing we have not seen is moose. Going to switch from Bow to Rifle now because we are not seeing any moose as of yet.

Any suggestions are welcomed!...

I was seeing an average of 20 moose a day on the Mica side, so I know they are there.  Just a matter of time and he'll have his hands around a big ole heart.

Hey Guys and Gals,

yes, it is true. I did get a monster Cow. We saw nothing for the first 3 days accept alot of sore muscles! That Starr Rd hill is never ending!. Then we saw a cow and a calf that I got out after and stalked up to 50 yards. I told myself if I got within 40 I would shoot for the heart with my bow but the calf was behind her and the cliff was next to her that I knew they would surely go down so I passed.

Then a few minutes later we saw a huge cow bedded about 120 yards away and she was looking at us. She was enormous so I decided to grab the rifle. I knelt down and took the first shot. I think I missed her. Then she started moving and I took my second shot. she slowed but did not look hit hard. I shot a third time and she flipped over and her hooves went straight up in the air! We walked down to her and ..........Holy Shnikeys! That is a clydesdale! I shot her at 7:30am and we got her back to camp at about 2:30pm. We then saw 3 monster bulls on the way back to the bottom.

This morning we left and went to the top and saw 10 Bulls and two cows. We called in a few bulls. It was awesome! I think i could love moose hunting almost as much as I love Elk Hunting. We had cow moose moaning and calling and bulls running to them. It was very exciting. We are going back out tomorrow to get some more pics and video hopefully. I have many people to thank when I post my pics!. Right now we are beat and heading for bed. We did see a herd of 12 Elk on the way up which was also very cool to see. Night all!  More tomorrow.

Regards,

Brianb231

Little bigger than the average deer when you go to gut them huh.   Hard to explain that to someone until they walk up onto their first moose.   Congrats, I knew it was only a matter of time.

Today we went out and were searching for a Whitetail and some more Moose footage. We got up fairly high and hit a skid road and we met a Bull moose in the middle of the skid that thought we should move and not him. So we had a little stand off for about 10 min until he finally conceded. He was at about 20 yards. Got some good footage I think. The rest of the morning was pretty uneventful. We saw 4 moose total this morning.

We are planning on leaving in the morning and I will post some photos when I get home.

I will give you my last update tomorrow.

See ya,

Brianb231

Nice job dropping that beautiful cow. She's a pig.

I hunted moose in NH, unsuccessfully. But while I was scouting, I called a super-mature bull in to about 5 yards. Huge animal, probably 1200 lbs or so with fully extended paddles. It was one of the most exciting experiences of my hunting. Easy to call, too. When it came time for the 3-day hunt, it rained so hard for the entire three days that you couldn't see 50 yards. Tough hunt.

I did camp by the gate actually. Thanks for your info as well. So many helpful guys on this site. There were not many deer hunters. I bet we saw 3-4 deer hunters close to the weekends. It felt like we had the whole mountain to ourselves. It is hard now that the gate is closed but it is worth it if you put in the effort.

We did not see many deer though.... :dunno:

I am trying to put a video together of the hunt which is why the pics are taking so long. Hopefully soon.

I was fortunate to be a part of this hunt with BrianB123, and am very thankful to him for including me!

This was the hardest hunt I have been on yet, and it honestly humbled me a little bit.  I used to think I could go anywhere, anytime, no problem.  Well, one day we really over did it and put in somewhere between 18- 20 miles (5 on mountain bikes) and we paid for it.  It took the whole trip to recover, but we never quit looking.  In fact, after Brian got his cow, we still pushed on every day to video some moose and look for deer and bear!  Thanks goes to my hunting partner for being the "pusher" on this trip!  And to my 69 year old uncle, who never missed a hunt on this trip either!  He is an inspiration!  This is one trip I will never forget!

I can tell you, that I have been putting in for moose for 13 years, mostly just because it was something else to hope for.  Now that I have seen bulls and cows come to the call, the size and intensity of the bulls.... I CAN'T wait to get drawn!!!!!

As a side note,  I was on this hunt and I am STILL waiting for more pics   :bash:    :chuckle: :chuckle:
Thanks Brian!
