I went out with my uncle and 13 year old cousin Samantha near my old hometown in eastern Washington.
I was completely anticipating a good old fashioned muledeer hunt.
The night before the opener, we were glassing the hillside we were planning on hunting opening morning and saw a nice main frame two that had a crab claw and some trash; you know, the stickers and such that make him a unique buck. Well, my cousin ended up shooting him on Sunday morning, and he was a 4x4 after all the stickers and everything, true trophy for a first buck!
Back to my story....Opening morning went as per the norm. Started out by glassing some muledeer doe. Pushed down a draw, spooked another muledeer doe. Came up and over a hill onto the spring where I was hoping the big boy would be hiding. Spooked up two lil white tail bucks. All I saw of them before they left were the white flags flying and a 2 point and a 3 point rack bounding up the other side of the hill.
My uncle and cousin were 2-300 yards to my southeast, maybe south, and I started walking their direction. As I did, I heard the all too familiar:crash, crash, splash, crash. I then saw a lil dink buck jumping across the creek and towards the barbed wire fence. I then saw, hot on his tails the big boy of the draw.
I shot the big one right before he hit the fence line.
I was fully hoping on getting a 4x4 muledeer, but wound up shooting the biggest buck of my life, the first white tail I've ever shot and well, the rest is backstraps and planning next years hunt.
