Post by: jason4429 on October 24, 2011, 12:22:20 PM
I will have ten points next year in the buck hunt catergory.I haven't hunted Whitetails in Washington before.I'm just trying to find some public land to hunt .I have spent very little time in these areas.I thought if i got started now i might have a chance at finding a buck. I would be very grateful for any info.

Your first step is to determine which area you want to hunt (GMU) and which weapon you are going using.  It seems as if you are asking where good whitetail units are statewide.  I would look at the harvest kill report which Fish & Game puts out every year.  This will tell you where there are lots deer, which usually equals lots of hunters on public land.  It won't tell you which specie of deer was harvested, but it definitely helps for deer numbers.   Also, do you want to hunt a later season or early season? The late buck hunt in the Palouse is usually really good, but it's mostly private land.  I give your props for thinking about next year already, but maybe think about putting on the boots and covering some ground between now and next year.  The "Go Hunt" web page on fish and game is really helpful for finding public land. What have you been putting in for the last 10 years? Good luck to you!

I have been putting in for some of the impossible Mule deer hunts, until this year I drew the GMU 485 blacktail tag,so now I will be trying to draw a buck tag instead of a quality tag.I was just looking for some big chunk of land to put my boots on.Does anyone know about the Wooten wildlife area in the GMU 166

There is plenty of land to hunt. Good deer numbers but you'll mostly be looking at 2-1/2 year old bucks. There are a few good ones but rarely a great one.

I'm not going to be looking for a Boone and Crockett buck. When you say there is plenty of land are talking about on the wildlife area.
