Title: Fort Lewis Technique Question?
Post by: huntaddictsteve on October 25, 2011, 10:48:25 AM: I am a soldier stationed at Fort Lewis, and a fairly new hunter. I have been doing a lot of scouting on Fort Lewis the last couple of months, and been hunting there since opening day without any luck. Well, this morning I found several fresh rubs that weren't there last night. Just looking for any pointers on how to hunt them, or should I just leave them alone? Any other pointers would be appreciated as well. I know there aren't any deer on Fort Lewis, but I may have seen several driving in or driving out, and might have seen lots of sign. I just haven't seen any bucks during legal hunting hours. I have seen several does entering a clear cut right at sunset. I stay off the roads, use scent control, and am quiet. Thanks in advance for any help!!!

13. Apply Rut Tactics

By the third week in October, many blacktail bucks are starting to think "rut." Though they may not have active rub lines or be chasing does this early, many bucks are ready; it's the fact that the does aren't in heat that explains why the bucks haven't peaked. But their interest is there, and knowing this, hunters can rattle and call to bring deer into range. This works well in thick brush, where sneaking in tight is all but impossible. The end of October marks what I consider to be prime rattling time, as by this time, bucks are fired-up and the ladies aren't quite ready. At this time, hunters can move in and gain a buck's interest through rattling, an often overlooked tactic this time of year.

14. Hit Storms

One of the best times to be in the blacktail woods is immediately following a storm. Rain and wind storms cause mosses and lichens to fall from trees, and these can be prime food sources in many areas where blacktails roam. Furthermore, the ground is wet, making for quiet going for hunters. Slow hunting through wooded sections can be very productive after a storm, as deer can often be found feeding well into the morning.

You did not happen to find them in arre 13 did you :rolleyes:

I did some rattling and some bleats this afternoon with no success. I even put some moccasin joes bt urine out. I guess I will keep at it and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for help guys.

I headed over there after work and was stuck in the traffic !@#$%^ and got there with 30 min. of light left.
Talked to a guy who was there all day. Seen no deer but heard of a 3 point taken out yesterday. I was going to go today but had things to do. I was going to head to he swamps tommorow but the wife blew the clutch out in her truck :bash: Gotta look at it tommorow and probably fix it this weekend :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:
