Title: Badlands buck
Post by: DaveBTS on October 25, 2011, 11:24:41 AM
I took two of my daughters on a last minute hunt Sunday afternoon. We saw a few does early at the spot I wanted to hunt, but decided to check another area I hunted during bow season. After arriving, that wasn't looking promising either so we turned around and headed back to the ranch where I wanted to be. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught the rump patch of a deer. I figured it was doe since I had watched a herd of does there earlier in the season. Then I saw it was a lone buck. I didn't know how big, but I wanted the girls to be in on a successful hunt. I snuck up the draw about 300 yds and found a rest on an old fence line. I think I missed with my first shot, but after he stopped, I anchored him with the second shot. I walked back down to the truck and grabbed my pack, the girls and we headed up the canyon. We found him bedded under a cedar, very much alive. One last shot and then the daunting pack out. We took a few cell phone pics, but waited until I got him to the road to take the real pictures because I wanted to make sure I got the girls out before dark.

Theres pics of the hunt on my Blacktail Specialties FB page.

Nice job Dave...  Sounds like the girls were pretty quiet which was a bonus...

Having a 30mph wind also helped! That buck had no idea we were even there. I told the girls I could smell him as we headed up the hill. I stopped to look for blood and he was 2 ft from me looking up at me.

"Can we pet him?"

"Not until after I shoot him again."

"I want to pet him BEFORE he dies."

"No."

I've already seen a few bucks that make mine look like a yearling. Time to get my wife a tag.
