So I was at Cabelas tonight and was talking with a couple people and another guy overheard our conversation and said its true... I don't think it's true at all but anyways what we were talking is...
I was drawn for a Special Permit Anterless Tag for Winston Creek for January 1st 2012 for Modern Firearm Elk.
The guy said that he was also drawn for it and talked to the Fish and Wildlife and said they told him the same thing that you can get a bull with your regular elk tag and a cow with the special permit tag...
I'm calling the morning to find out but I already know it can't be true.
What do you think? Have you heard anything about this and hunters that were drawn for this have you heard anything?
-
I doubt wdfw would allow that.
-
I think that licenses are good though march sometime so you wouldnt be able to buy the 2012 tags until after the 15 of march i think it is. but would be interested to hear what you find out because i have rifle bull tag and then the late cow hunt also.
-
Elkslayer do you have the Winston Creek Antlerless Hunt Tag for January 1st??
Yeah and I don't think its true at all... I'm only going to kill one elk anyways!! That heard isn't that big. So if I get a bull thats that. Otherwise I know I will get a cow within 15 mins of opening of the special hunt.
-
Dont be too over confident with that cow tag. I hunt the winston every year and i know the chances of you tagging out are very good especially if the gates are open. but I had a mudflow cow tag and thought it was going to be the easiest hunt of my life when we scouted it. then opening day came and I saw more bulls then I have ever seen in my life and ended up eating my tag. Good luck though! im sure it will be fun
-
Well I do believe that I can go for the regular modern firearm season in 11 days and try for a bull. But if I don't get a bull then I can go for my cow on January 1st 2012.
-
Yeah the 1th or the 15th i cant remember but in january but i dont figure on using it considering i have a margaret tag
-
oh wow... how did you get drawn for 2 tags?? Can you be drawn for 2 in the same year?
-
yes and yes but only get to use one of them
-
I got drawn for two tags too, except mine are for the same time frame. :bash:
-
You best call... If you have two seperate tags in your hands that you can risk it. But I am not sure I would report the other one. I personally would call to get clarification. I think Yelm hunter and slayer are correct in that you only get one animal.
-
yeah they are probably right. Wish you could give one tag back so it didn't waste your points. Takes a long time to make those up.
-
You can only kill one elk. Either a bull during modern or your special permit for a cow. IF you drew a second elk tag obviously thats a different story.
And you can turn in a tag to get your points back but you would have had to do it a long time ago, not long after you found out you got drawn. I know this because I have friends who have drawn a tag that they didn't mean to put in for and didn't want to waste points, or had other commitments (like having a baby) so couldn't hunt.

What? You can risk it? Don't report it? That would be poaching.
You can harvest only one elk. It always seems to amaze me how many people don't know the regs.

Good info about turning in your tag. Thanks! Wish I would have known that earlier. Oh well, I'm eating one of them this year I guess.

In all fairness, the regs are sometimes not all that clear. Secondly, If someone has never been picked for a special permit before, maybe they are just naive to the process. Not everyone sits up all night and studies the regs in detail from front to back.

They are not supposed to let people turn in their permits for reasons like that. Your friends got lucky to be able to do that, or maybe it was prior to the WDFW getting more strict on their rules about turning back in your permits.

:yeah: My father got drawn for 2 tags last year Bull and Cow, we decided to pass on the cow tag, then I took his rifle away from him on modern season so he didn't get trigger happy, and then we successfully got his Bull. But back to the point we tried to turn back his cow tag to get his points back and WDFW said that he would have to be on his last leg and a doctors note, or incapacitated, which would need to be documented by a health care professional. Also even though he had those 2 permits, and the general season he was only capable to harvest 1 animal.
-
Weird because last year is when my brother inlaw drew a spring bear tag but was having a baby so he turned it in. I'm the one who contacted WDFW to see if he could because he was just going to let the tag and points go to waste... I'm sure I still have the email somewhere. I remember asking if I could get his tag, which I knew was a stupid quesion but I thought what the heck. They responded no that would be unfair but he can turn his tag in and get his points back. So he did. He drew the same spring bear tag again this year!
-
Well, I guess it goes to show that it never hurts to ask even though they have rules written out that say otherwise. Maybe they aren't as concerned with bear permits.......... :dunno:

The only way you can do that is if you are drawn for a tag that allows a second elk.I'm pretty sure the only tag that does that is the Master Hunter second elk tag.And I'm not so sure its during that time frame. But havent looked at the regs.
-
Not a branched antler season in jANUARY So I highly doubt it :dunno:
-
It's a ANTLERLESS tag for Winston Creek JANUARY 1ST 2012 - JANUARY 15th 2012
-
You can either harvest a bull during the regular season OR a cow during the permit season. If you harvest a bull during the regular season, your cow permit is null and void.
-
I'm thinkin a guy ought to go check around the Winston unit during that time frame.Might be able to get some extra points for the permit draws.
-
I know I can only take 1 bull or 1 cow... im saying I heard that at Cabelas while talking with some people.
