Post by: KopperBuck on November 24, 2011, 12:17:49 AM: Typically I don't enjoy the late WT, or for that matter any WT season. I have a lot of respect for the critters, but where we come from they're considered invasive. Or maybe I hate the fact that everytime I see one it's giving me the white middle finger. I don't mind hunting mulies in the timber, but have had ZERO success on the WT front. Usually hunt it if the general doesn't go well. Which this year it hadn't. It wasn't for a lack of bucks, in fact had more chances at shooters than ever, it just never worked out. And I wasn't as stressed out since I got my brother his first deer. Having a 2nd deer tag in the pocket I wasn't pressing too hard. I got talked into going back up for the late hunt, again, even though I can't stand it. I was looking at it more as a camping trip. See a few deer here and there and keep company. Well the first day (Weds after opener) we saw more deer than I have ever seen during this hunt. It was a new area for us, we were only going to be there for two days to scout it out for when we came back the next week. But *censored* again, if those little rats weren't giving me the white finger again. My buddy and I both being MD guys were seriously struggling to still hunt for these guys. That night around the fire I told him I was finally going to rattle some sheds that I threw in by chance. I don't like calling unless it's a predator. When it comes to birds I'm typically silent. My buddy on the other hand loves to blow the trumpet. So I threw him for a loop when I wanted to make some noise. 200 yds into a willow thicket on the first hunt the next day I rattled two sequences, not even 5 seconds after I dropped the horns on the second I heard a grunt up the hillside not even 50 yds from me. I thought for sure I was blown, but was hoping my buddy was on him (positioned 75 yards off my hindquarter). Hearing no shot I finally had to turn and look up. Sure enough this guy was interested and rolling down to my feet in just seconds. First WT, and I have to tell you, I'm hooked.

Growing up around Yakima I was brought up that whitetails were invasive and that they were encroaching on Mule Deer and were partly responsible for their decline. That they were slowly spreading west and would soon KS in Yakima county and would one day push tje mule deer out.

Of course now I know this isn't true and enjoy hunting WT as much as ME.

I disagree. Each has its own challenges. It's hard to say which is harder. Each has things that are easier than the other and each has things that make it harder than the other. With a rifle I would be inclined to agree with yoku. With a bow I think Mule Deer are tougher.

NE Oregon. In the last couple years we've been seeing a few does here and there. This year we picked up a couple nicer bucks, but would rather see the MD that were originally there.

As far as difficulty, like colockumelk said, they each have their differences. In the past WT have been harder for me b/c I don't know how to hunt them, which led to fewer sightings of mature deer. Still learning.

No score, probably won't. Having a euro done though, it'll look good. We were within a couple hours of Colville.
