Title: Can you use too much scent?
Post by: bigbucks1985 on November 25, 2011, 10:31:49 PM
I am hunting late bow in NE wa and was gonna use doe estrus on a drag on the way to my blind and also some scent wicks with doe estrus. Has anyone experienced bad results of using too much scent. I also plan on possibly using a doe bleat can call if i dont see anything early on. As the deer are still mostly nocturnal(according to trail cam shots on 17). Anyone with advice would be great Going out in the morning hoping i can a big one to walk by the stand, we will see.  :chuckle:
good luck all you late season bow hunters

That's a really good question. I'd like to hear of any experiences people have with that also. All I know is I was putting out one of those scent wicks this year, during the last week of October, and I'd dip it in a bottle of doe in heat scent so it was completely saturated, and hang it in a bush or tree, near my stand. It was so strong I could smell it from 30 yards away if I was downwind. I know it was a lot stronger than what would be natural. But I did have a doe with two fawns come by and spend 30 minutes feeding right in front of me, and they were directly downwind from the scent, and it didn't spook them. The doe did stand in one spot for quite a while when she got directly downwind, and only about 10 yards away from the scent- looked like she was just smelling the air and not quite sure what to think. But she wasn't alarmed.

I had 3 bucks and a dozen or so does walk within 18" of a finish scent bomb loaded with scent.....they never even looked at it. I think the scent needs a decoy to be truly effective during the first cycle. You may have better luck during round two.
