Title: New spotting scope
Post by: thurman on November 29, 2011, 04:03:03 PM
These i have been looking at the most just on the computer, i havent looked through them. Just wondering if any one has any expirence with any of these or any others in this price range looking at $450 max to spend. Im leaning more towards the Leupold Ventana, but wondering if the 80 power is worth the extra $150 and i have never looked through a angled scope if they have there advantages or not.

Hey trev,I dont know anything about the one's your looking at but something to consider is with the angled scope it's harder  to use out the window of your truck..

What is the main purpose for the spotting scope.  Are you going to back pack in.  Are you going to be scoping clear cuts on the West Side or using it to spot stuff in the timber.  Or are you doing alot of open country stuff, spotting near or from your truck.  This will make a huge impact on what I tell you to buy.

I haven't heard anything good about angled eye pieces  :twocents: oTher than that I love my nikon, just wish it had a little more light transition when at full power only complaint  :twocents:

A good 27 power wide angle eyepiece is soooooooo much better than a cheap 80 power and most all zoom eyepieces that it is silly. Forget the 80 power stuff unless you can add a zero to your budget.

+1 Stick with the straight spotter for hunting  :twocents:

FWIW, here is a picture of a  full moon I was able to take out of a Nikon Fieldscope with my cell phone camera. Chromatic abberation is well controlled.

I would concentrate on scopes under 30x it has been my experience that in hunting conditions most of the time anything above that isn't usable
