One of my pure melanistic birds has been running around the Wenas breeding with some ringnecks I assume.   This bird is a free range pheasant that came looking for a bit of corn.   It looks about %50 melanistic.  Could possibly be two generations out.   I seen a black hen about a week ago.  The mels tend to be spookier than the regular ringnecks.

Those are great birds!! Hardy pheasants, Wish somebody would raise more of them and start releasing them on the west side.

Here you go bone, been looking for these and found them today. It was mixed in with all my NZ pics from this year. This is a full blood from New Zealand. I have always been trying to shoot one when I am over there. They always pop out when I am big game hunting and never when I have a shotgun in my hands. Thought I would share

Bone that is one very nice looking bird.  When did you take the picture?  He looks like he is displaying his Spring Wattles.  Thanks for sharing the pic......John

Good question John.  Its an older pic.  It might have been spring.  He was certainly calling alot.  I ahve a full one in the freezer I keep contemplating hooking up with you or doing myself.   I got a new office at work and was thinking hed be cool in there.   Hopefully he isn't freezer burned yet.

Those are probably some of my Reeves Genetics you have there. :chuckle:    I sold some to a gentleman who was raising them and releasing them down in Dayton/Blues for the WDFW.   He liked the heads on mine.

Their biggest downfall is their aggression.

The big one there had about a 3' tail.  He flew over me and I thought he was a peacock he was so big and noisy.  Fantastic eating.  We took these with Skip Geer at the Mayville Flat reserve in Fossil, OR.

They are a cool bird.   Their tails get up to 6 feet.   I've got one with a tail about 48 inches now.     Theres been a pretty good population around Dayton, but don't know if they are breeding or not.   Typical of pheasants, they can be dumb as sticks.

If you raise 'em I'll help you shoot 'em.  And eat 'em!

LOL, yeah I might need help shooting them, last time I raised birds released them and didn't have the heart to shoot them. I thought maybe they'd have a chance at making it. So yea I'd rather you help me eat them rather than the coyotes, hawks and owls getting fat off them .

I bought a few reeves roosters from a guy out of Walla Walla a few years back. He was raising about 400 a year for release in the dayton/blues area. I got a couple real nice roosters...you can really get good ones when you are looking at 50-75 to choose from. I bet it was the same guy you dealt with Bone. He said he remembered hunting them as a kid when the GAME Dept. released a bunch, liked it so much he was trying it again.

  He took the creme of my crop.   Some damn good Reeves genetics.   I think he was working on releasing mountain quail down there too.  Its been awhile since I have talked to him.  Real nice guy.
