Title: 2 Dog day
Post by: jager on December 04, 2011, 07:19:01 PM
The first set was a bust...nothing
I did tip my gun over and it smacked a rock pretty good.
On the way to our second set a we jumped a coyote, my nephew pulls up and shoots at about 60 yards. He comes flying out of the grass and I can see he's hit hard. I don't shoot. (blood trail was about 70 yards)
He clipped his heart, and boy did he bleed out.
On the way to our "second set" I spot a coyote again, at about 60 yards, big and dark colored, it trots up the hill and I squeak to stop it at 119 yards. I've got a solid rest on the bipod. boom..he runs, I shoot again. Nothing. My gun is off!
He's running but not full bore...my nephew takes two shots both miss.
Still having only called in one spot we try to get closer to this coyote by cutting him off. We spot him at about 400 yards...we don''t even try.
After we settled down for a little snack we are up and glassing looking for another likely spot...sure enough, I spot a coyote at about 250 yards. My nephew trades me guns  :chuckle: We close the distance by about a hundred yards. By now she's farther away, and doesn't see us. That lasts about 5 seconds and locks on to my position. A couple squeaks on the call and here she comes trotting closer. She stops at 180 yards facing us. I think this may be my last opportunity. Deep breath...boom, she spins, she's down. Not huge but nice hide. I skinned her out and we hiked back to the truck. No more coyotes. but we did pretty good for not calling any in!

Not rushing. I was actually supposed to get a coyote guided hunt going tomorrow but at the last minute my buddy backed out. I couldn't shell out the entire payment even though it was a HUGE discount. Needless to say I feel like dirt because I let this guy down due to my "buddy" having issues. The other feeling I have is self doubt on my setups, but as soon as I get one in that will vanish. I just hope I'm not like that other guy that went 50 something stands and only saw a couple hangups.

Jager, for the record, I'm still jealous  :tung:

True, actually started thinking about a couple of 2 hr stands. Mostly so I don't have to walk up so many cliffs  :chuckle:
