Title: My Wife's late season whitetail
Post by: DBHAWTHORNE on December 10, 2011, 09:57:26 PM
My wife killed this buck yesterday evening. The shot appeared to be a little far back and the blood was dark so I suspected a liver shot. We gave it a couple hours and I followed the blood trail 200 yards before deciding to back off and wait until today. After getting all the waypoints loaded into Google Maps we learned that this buck traveled nearly 700 yards and 400 meters of it was up a steep hill!!  :yike: A good friend came out to help me track this morning. There were several points where confidence was at an all time low but we stuck with it. The last 20 yards of blood trail was very heavy...see pic below...it would have been nice to have that kind of blood trail the entire way! This is her fourth buck in four years of hunting. It is good to have some venison in the freezer.  :IBCOOL:

The snow helped tremendously. It was on a south facing slope and most of his movement was through open stuff with very patchy snow and it was definitely tougher in those areas.

Hopefully. Right now I have a bunch of 3 1/2 year olds on camera. They have respectable P&Y class antlers but they just need a year or two to grow. I may go out and take a look at them on the hoof to see if I am misjudging their age. If I can find a good 4 1/2 or 5 1/2 year old then he is going down. I don't care what size antlers he has.

It is great! She is very passionate about hunting and for that reason we are able to spend countless hours in the field as a family.

:hello: Thanks everyone... I really love to be out there.  This year proved to be my hardest season yet.  Making sure that I'm up in the tree stand every chance I get helps ensure a successful season.
