Title: out of state elk hunts. what are your plans?
Post by: D-Rock425 on December 17, 2011, 07:49:32 AM
I know a lot of you guys put in for out of state hunts every year.  I thought it would be cool to see where people plan to put in for or plan on hunting in 2012 for elk.

My out of state budget/plans has been shrinking dramatically............Utah probably for sure.

First off this new year I have to find a more dedicated hunting partner (my current hunting partner has found that being a small bussiness owner has left him no time to hunt) I would like to hunt Idaho for Deer and Elk and maybe Wyoming for speed goats.

My out of state budget/plans has been shrinking dramatically............Utah probably for sure.

 :yeah:
Non resident fees have been increasing, in some states bordering on the ridiculous for the average hunter's budget.
I used to hunt OR but now every other season...maybe.

This is the first year I am going to start to really putting in for out-of-state tags, permits and points. For elk, I think I should draw Montana, and put in for points in Colorado and Wyoming.

NM and AZ for sure. Probably the Gila National Forest due to their ridonculous size and low hunting pressure.

I got a buddy who has private property access near where the Spider Bull was killed in Utah. I will pursue that if I don't get drawn in AZ/NM. There's always the farm in WA I can buy an OTC tag in.

If not drawn in Wyoming then we may do a Colorado 3rd season OTC elk.

We just reserved six spots for BC elk, deer and bear for next year with Sawtooth/Grizzly Basin.  Giving two spots away to some guys I met hunting early season.  Going to see what my other friends are willing to do for the final two spots.  I'm hoping at least one will offer to build a new shed for the squaw so I can get her crap out of my stuff.

Hopefully cashing in my 10 points in Utah on  LE archery elk tag we will see, plus putting in for deer and moose as well.

Coloado- deer draw and maybe a archery or 3rd season OTC elk tag if no Utah tag.
Wyoming- elk and deer points
Nevada- deer draw
Montana- deer combo ( not sure though deer #'s are way down may hold off a year or two)

ID    I plan on putting in for a muzzy deer tag.  And I will also apply for elk and antelope tags.  Just not sure what units yet for elk and antelope.
MT   Going to put in for just the deer combo.
CO   Going to buy another deer point most likely.  But there is still a chance I might put in for a tag.
Wy   I will atleast buy points for deer, elk, and antelope.  And most likely will put in for an antelope tag.  If I fail to draw any tags i'll pickup a left over for deer.
UT    I will put in for deer and elk.
AZ    I will buy my deer, elk, and sheep points.
OR    I'm going to buy points for deer and elk.  And apply for sheep.
NV    I'll atleast buy points for everything.  Might put in for a deer tag.

Still have to talk to my hunting buddies and make final plans.  Right now they are very fluid.

Waiting to get the Wyoming regs to see if they go up this year. Either way, puttin in for Wyoming elk, Idaho special elk and deer, over the counter elk if I don't draw.  This is getting expensive!!!!

Wy regs are out.  Go take a look.

Normally I'm in a bunch of states, but I see that both AZ and NM have joined UT and OR in making you buy a hunting license first, before you applay for a tag.  Ouch!  More $$ not coming back after I blank the draw.   So, we'll see how the finances hold up over the next couple of months.

NM's license is $60. If I read the regs correct, you can have your license cost refunded if you're not drawn for anything. There is still like a $20 fee that comes out of the tag though. I believe AZ is about $150 for NR, and I dont think that gets refunded.

Wy regs are out.  Go take a look.
...

Thanks! I will.

On page 4 of the NM regs, under "Important Information:"

Quote
7. Hunters Are Encouraged to USE IT!
Hunters who are unsuccessful in the drawing are
encouraged to keep their Game-hunting License
and use it for hunting small game during open seasons.
If requested at time of application, refunds will be offered
for the Game-hunting License, but NOT the combination
Game-hunting and Fishing License. Refunds will be
issued in May.

Anybody?  :dunno:

Bean,  my bad!! I was looking and thinking Arizona and not NM..

Then I realized AZ has had the license thing foing for seveal years already.   You're fine my friend, I on the otherhand am obviously trying to get drawn in too many stats and getting way to confused.

Dang,  either that or the rum cake was reallllllllly good this year.

Merry Christmas
