anyone else get the paper work yet? i have a few questions
-
Yuuup got the packet in the mail today. I dont know why any gates would be closed this time of year. But I guess if we come across a locked gate we can try the combo?
-
y i was wondering if we can go in early and scout cuz the pink window decal ses 1-16 only? i put in for this tag thinking my friend would be able to help out because i have never hunted this area but he moved so now i am kind over loaded with trying to find a spot to start or a road to go off of so i would like to scout it if possible
-
You wont need to scout to fill that tag, trust me :twocents:
-
You wont need to scout to fill that tag, trust me :twocents:
thats what i have heard but with 200 :yike: tags given out i am kinda thinking its going to be a mad house.
-
I know the map they sent was not the best. But the elk can be anywhere, most days of honest hunting in 520 will give you a chance at a cow.
-
You wont need to scout to fill that tag, trust me
That sounds like all the cow tag holders in the regular season who had never been there and couldn't fill their tags.
-
ok should i go for the clear cuts or just hit the timber
-
pm me I don't have the tag but know how to get around the whole gate thing
-
If you get snow it will be great if not it will be like regular season. I would go scout if you have time. There is nothing like hunting and not knowing where to start. Find a few places then go from there. If you spend time in the unit you will fill your tag. Put in a little scouting and you should have no problem. I live in the southern part of the unit and it has plenty of elk, but it is easy access for people for target shooting and 4x4. You will see people driving around. 200 late tags is a lot. Good luck and bring your binos you will be fine.
-
My wife got hers in the mail today. I have hunted Winston alot and I'm sure you can fill the tag with out scouting if you put your time in but if I were you I would do at least a little scouting.
-
I would scout just to get to know the area. I have hunted down in 520 for many years and ate a antlerless muzzle tag in Oct. I thought it would be a cake walk because the success we have had in our achery seasons over the years, boy was I wrong. I had 1 chance at a cow in the reprod under 50 yards, I just couldn't tell what part of the elk I was seeing.
I would hit the cuts in the early morning and then switch to the timber and reprod hunting durning the day. The elk are in there, just don't think it is going to be a easy hunt. Those elk have been running scared since sept.
-
thanks for all the info guys but do you think 200 tag holders will pack the place cuz i know its a big area
-
I got my packet in the mail today.... The elk have been running crazy since Sept.... But they have had a break since December 9th... You won't need to scout for this hunt. You may not even have to set up camp. I know I wont. Even though I'm going too. Were are you guys planning on camping at? It should be opening day and out with your cow by 12noon!! Good Luck and we'll see you around. I'll be in a Blue Chevy!
-
Here is my prediction out of 200 tags I say only 50 get filled? Just a prediction. What do you think?
-
WOW! I have been hunting the unit for over 30 years and live close by and pretty sure I could kill a cow but one day and out by noon? It never ceases to amaze me of all the people that draw a tag for 520 and think they will just drive in, see elk all over, shoot and drive home. I figure yelm is just under 2 hours to get home so I would expect pictures and a post before dark. Good luck and I look forward to hearing how easy it was.
-
Thank you someone who thinks the way I do. Put in you time scout as much as possible and you will be successful. Good luck and believe 50 out of two hundred is a good number. :yeah:
-
I know that area very well and would be willing to help someone who would make it worth my while. We were in the elk all late archery season just couldn't get the right shot !
-
Ummm 520 late archery. Ummm
-
Umm what
-
How was that late hunt is what I meant sorry for confusion.
-
Here is my prediction out of 200 tags I say only 50 get filled? Just a prediction. What do you think?
Mine and my Cousins will be 2 of them filled..... And thats true cause how many of these guys ended up getting a BULL during the regular season?
-
I called the hotline last night to take a look at scouting the area over the weekend and the recording didn't include the St. Helens tree farm. I know that during the regular season from September to November they provide general public access on the weekends. What do they offer in December does anyone know? :dunno:
-
Has anyone hunted the Winston in the snow? I am curious if they flood the pastures on private land. Hope not.
-
The snow has very little,if any affect on th elk in the Winston unit.
-
ya people a sending some mixed signals here but i guess i will try to sneak away this week and do some scouting to be on the safe side

Let us know if you are able to access the tree farm. But last I heard from my cousin they were not allowing anyone up past the 3 mile marker on the 3000 rd and no one was allowed on the 19 mile rd. Until December 30th to set up camp for the January 1st hunt...
-
Just a Reminder,
Make sure you know were you are there is 300 acres of private property along SR 504 and the 2500 road ( eco park ) that does not allow hunting of any kind. It is posted, please respect the signs. And, like hunting, you will more than likely see elk on this property, But, Please Don't Shoot Them.
Thanks for reading this, good luck hunting.

That's way out of the Winston unit, by a couple of miles. If someone shoots an elk on that private property, they're going to have bigger problems than just a trespassing ticket, since they would be hunting in a closed unit (Margaret). I'd like to think that everyone with this elk permit will know the boundaries of the Winston unit better than that.
-
:yeah: :yeah:
Exactaly thank you very much!! I know my bounderies and I know were I'm hunting at!! 520 is 520 and thats were my permit is good for!
-
Try the Toutle side of the Winston southern boundary, access near Mudflow
-
The wife and I will be heading out too, she is looking for her first elk harvest! She is excited! I told her we shouldn't have too big of an issue as long as we get our info package. Ended up coming the day I called to check on it!
I have her shooting a Browning A-bolt in .358 Win, loaded with 250 gr. Sierra Pro-Hunter bullets, it will be interesting to see how they perform.
-
The wife and I will be in there driving a silver Tundra with a Muley license plate. See you in there!
-
whats this packet that everyone is talking about? my wife has a tag, but we haven't gotten any packet in the mail. just wondering what i'm missing out on. i don't think it's going to be hard to find elk up there. i live right there and have seen elk in the back yard last week. should be an easy hunt for her first.
-
Maps, access placard, gate combo, rules, etc.
-
thanks. i guess i'll be making some calls tomorrow to find out why i didn't get that. i don't imagine that we'll need any of it though.
-
huh ...had my sons for awile now !! best call them :yeah:
-
Yeah my cousin didn't get it either... Fish and Wildlife as the wrong address in the computer system for you guys probably too... But to hunt you MUST have the placard placed in your window at all times even with your anterless (cow) permit they sent out to you the first couple of weeks after you were selected for the hunt... I got all my paperwork sent to me 3 weeks ago... I'm heading down there tomorrow night and checking my cameras and scouting on saturday... I'm hoping I get a cougar the last day of the season... December 31st
Good Luck everyone and wish me luck too!!
-
Isn't the placard only for driving in behind locked Weyerhaeuser gates? If they haven't yet received the packet in the mail they also won't have the combination to the locks, so they don't need the placard.
-
I talked to the Warden today and he said if you are "hunting" for elk in this area and were selected for the hunt you MUST have the placard displayed in view of the warden, lewis county sheriff and weyco staff. Because ALL other hunting seasons are over!! That is what he told me and my father.
-
What if you're just down there to photograph elk? Or coyote hunt? Or bobcat hunt? Just doesn't sound right. You're sure it's not just for the Weyerhaeuser land? What exactly does the placard have written on it?
-

:yeah:
-
Well all I know is my dad had a cow elk hunt in the Toledo area earlier this year and Weyerhaeuser allowed us to drive behind certain gates. There was a placard required for that purpose. It was basically an authorization from Weyerhaeuser to be driving in an area that was closed to motorized vehicles.
-
I had a margaret cow tag this year and all they did was put black plastic bags over there no entry signs. Same for my dads toutle cow tag.
-
That's what I was asking the warden today... Cause my brother and my father are going with me. He said you could not carry a rifle in the 520 unit between January 1st and January 16th unless you were selected for the hunt... But you may carry a pistol for you own protection... I don't know why!! My dad and brother wanted to carry a rifle for coyote/bobcat too. But I'm going to call and get a 2nd opioion tomorrow for sure from another warden or staff just to be on the safe side.
-
There is no reason why anyone should not be allowed to have a gun in that unit during that time.
-

Ok, that's what I thought. It's only for Weyerhaeuser land. Which of course you will probably be on, because it makes up most of the Winston unit. But there is also quite a bit of state land.

That may be partly correct and partly incorrect. If cougar is not still open, then you should still be able to hunt coyotes and bobcats, but you'd have to use a rifle that was less than 24 caliber to be legal.
-
my wife drew a tag, and we didn't get a packet. i called the number and got dean's voicemail. he's on vacation from dec 20 to jan 9. thanks a lot *censored*! manage a hunt and leave during most of it. as for needed this placard to hunt, you are full of it! i can assure you that the LCSO did not tell you that, and do i need the placard to hunt on my own property in the winston? you don't know what you're talking about. :twocents:
Correct. The Access Permit is for WeyCo land only. Plenty of private and state land to hunt without it.
-
Well yelmhunter you told us how easy it was going to be so where's your pictures?
