I just recieved a winchester model 70 300 magnum, I dont know much about it so any info is much appreciated....thanks in advance
-
classic, feather weight, stainless steel, claw extracter, lots of options.
-
There is a site for winchesters where you can either look at ranges of serial numbers or enter in the serial number to get some manufacture date info. For collectors/value.....earlier than 1964 is something to look for. Has to due with contracting to the Olin Corp.
-
I would send as much info to Winchester on the gun and see what they say..

thanks for the quick replies...looks like it is "the westener" model 70 300 magnum with a born on date of 1949.....now i just need to get it cleaned up good.....
-
Be careful "cleaning it up good" clean the bore and oil the metal, clean the stock.....but don't scrub the patina from the stock or refinish anything....that is a true classic.

Its way to big a cartridge according to most on this site, sell or trade it to me for a cartridge of your liking and I'll take good care of it. I'll be it's new " Daddy " per say. ;)

That would have to be a 300h&h mag,as the 300win mag is a much newer calibur.
-
pre-64 in 300 H&H would be a good one! be gentle when cleaning, you could take hundreds of dollars off the value.
-
it has some surface rust from the way it was stored before my wifes grandparents were given it.....my grandparents had it in a safe.....but grandpa never did much other than shoot it.....
-
Just go after it with some fine steel wool and oil...enjoy it.
-
'fine' like 0000 or 00000 wool. go slow, dont rub too hard, use plenty of lube, make it last... oh, sorry, that's instructions to something else. forget the last part. the rest applies.
-
Ahhh... just get rid of it. I'll do you a favor and take it off your hands for ya... Dang nice gun! Take good care of it.
Especially if it still has the original open sights on it, for some reason the last several Pre 64 300 H&H I have come across or missing the original sights or at least the rear. :bash:
-
thanks for the advice...I cant remeber if it has the rear sight but it definitly has the front and the scope is probally as old as the gun aswell....
-
Pics!

If it's a 1949 .300 H&H Winchester Model 70, you've got a true classic and a collector's piece. That's a terrific hunting rifle, and much more valuable if left un-modified.
Sweet piece of gear.

I would take a guess and say it's one of the old Weaver K series scopes?
