Title: calling blacktails?
Post by: Clancy on December 20, 2011, 05:01:21 AM
anyone ever call in black tails or rattle them in? I've always wanted to try rattling or maybe a grunt or doe call while slow hunting timber?

I rattled in my first buck this year on Oct. 30th. It was just a smaller 2 point. He came to about 25 or 30 feet from me and I never even raised my gun. Was kind of cool to watch him walk by.

I have tried to rattle and grunt quite a bit in the late archery season over the last three years to no avail. I get to the point where I think I am doing more harm than good.

I have not been successful with the grunt call, however I have had success with rattling them in (large & small bucks) and a preditor call works wonders in those large clearcuts, makes'em stand up, however the bigger bucks have a tendency to hold tight unless it is during the rut then ofcourse they tend to stick with the does.

If you're interested in a call, Alex Panalagao hand carves some beautiful yellow cedar calls. He started making them for Sitka Blacktails but has found they work on Columbia Blacktails too and Whitetails.  I just got a combo bleat/snort call from him to go with the rest of the calls I own.

To contact him.....

About 9 years ago I found a deer grunt tube in the woods. Tried it the next year in the area I found it. Sure enough after about 10 minutes here comes a little blacktail forky running full speed to me! He ran past and I had to wistle to get him to stop. Smoked him at about 10 yards with the muzzleloader.

We lost out Buckroar tube  in the woods this year... hope someone finds it and has  good luck as well!!

BTW,  I heard an actual  buck grunt two times last week while hunting... no one else around so I know it was  a real deer. Sure wish I woulda had my grunt tube coulda grunted back :'(
